C200: 24-70 lenses options (with IS) for C200 (or other cinema cameras)

So the Canon 24-70’s don’t have IS, the sigma 24-70 art has bad reviews (soft) and the tamron G2 seems like a great lens but inexplicably isn’t compatible with my C200 (I’ve tried). I find this astonishing that I can’t find a single decent lens with IS for this camera in this (massively popular) zoom range!

Anyone got any ideas? I’ve currently got a canon 24-70 mkii but I really need the IS (previously used on a Sony a7sii with in-body IS), so I’d like it’s IS replacement to not be massive drop-off in quality). My other lens is a 70-200 (with IS)

Have you tried the Sigma Art, or are you just going by reviews? I would highly recommend renting it and trying it out in real world scenarios. People who review lenses are prone to obsess over measurable details and then declare a verdict based on things like sharpness and chromatic aberration. I don't agree that sharpness on it's own equals how good or bad a lens is.

The other thing I would say is you might try out the EF-S 17-55 2.8 IS. That's basically the same FOV of a 24-70 on a crop sensor and it has IS and it's lighter. The construction isn't the best, but most agree that its optics are on par with better L lenses.

Drummond makes a good point about trying the lens and not just relying on reviews. Perhaps the Sigma 24-70 Art exhibits a bit of softness when eyeballing 50-megapixel stills, but looks just fine for 8.8-megapixel (or so) 4K video.

Cheers everyone, I might try out the sigma. It’s a good point that the reviews are based on 50 megapixel photos rather than the 9 of 4k or 2 of HD. As for the Tamron - it just doesn’t register AT ALL. I can’t understand why they wouldn’t make it work for this camera. I’ve heard a lot on here about the 17-55 and was thinking of using it as my go-to gimbal lens. So a 17-55, 24-70 and a 70-200, that’s the plan. Is the 17-55 really that good? I’m not really bothered about construction, especially if it means it’s lighter

With my C300 I use my 17-55 a lot; especially when handheld. It doesn't have L-level construction. A few years ago, a Canon video guy at their NAB booth said that while the video division would like to have a 17-75 with L-level construction, the photo lens division won't make an L lens for the smaller APS-C/EF-S sensors used in the C100, C200, etc... I guess the 18-80 kinda fills that slot kinda.

So the lens elements in the 17-55 seem to do a good job, but the barrels just don't turn as smoothly and nicely as on Canon L lenses. And it's not totally weather sealed. But it's light and does the job. And I spend a lot of time between 17 and 24 on that lens... I personally would have a hard time getting by with 24mm as my widest setting when working with APS-C sensors.

The 17-55 is worth checking out. And again, it might be worth renting (or borrowing) rather than just spinning in the store...so you'll have a sense of how the lens turns after it has some life in it.

But again, it's an imperfect workhorse. Note that I'm not talking about how it performs on a C200...

At least that's my take. Others may have different experiences and opinions.

I use a lot of nikon glass with my C500, I love how the the nikon lenses match each other in color and sharpness, these lenses don't have IS but they are built very well, I use the Nikon 17-55mm 2.8 ED DX, 28-70mm 2.8 ED, & 80-200 2.8 ED, these lenses also match very well with my Zeiss ZF primes. I do use Novoflex Nikon to EF mount adapters, they have no play or wiggle when mounted between the lens and camera. I also use a lens support as the zooms have a little weight.

What doesnt work with the tamron? The lens does not register at all or just the IS?

The new Tamron lenses are not recognized by my C300M2 either. No control of iris, as if it were a completely non electronic lens. A shame as the new Tamrons seem quite nice.

Very strange. I have heard that the V1 tamron work though(but not seen it in action).

Canon does build a 24-70L IS, but it is f/4. Having said that, it is a very sharp lens and holds up well even when wide open.

I've got the Sigma 24-70 ART mostly for photography but I've used it on my C100mk2 a couple of times and I don't find it soft at all.

Been shooting a lot of interviews lately with my Canon 17-55 2.8 IS, one last night even. It's a solid performer on my C200 in 4K and CRL. Sharp, pleasing colors and contrast. The only downsides I can find are build quality is meh and the AF is pretty slow compared to my STM lenses, not the best lens for shooting fast moving and changing subjects as I have outran the AF before, whereas on my 18-135 STM IS, the AF is ON IT, whatever it is tracking.
