235 Studios Presents: SEMELE

Wow, I've been following this thread since the beginning but I got real busy over the last few weeks and missed out on a bunch of new stuff. Those screen grabs look fantastic! I'm really excited to see your film. The set you built looks great and of course you're shooting with an M2! (which I want very badly!).

Mixing is in progress! Here are a few pics of the setup:

Did a little modification to the school studio, and added the large video preview (rear projection).

Man, glad to hear this is the school's studio ... for a sec I thought this was at your house or part of your bedroom, and I was immediately green with tech/geek envy! Lol.

Oh snap! Thanks for the clarification there Norm. I apparently missed where he said it wasn't his personal, in-house setup. I was trying to figure out how to make him my new best friend

Yea, I went with Jerry to help out, that is one pretty sweet setup that they've got.

He showed me how to use Pro Tools (or "Slow Tools" as he calls it, and I can see why...)

Haha, I wish that was my setup (except for the ProTools part). The way we were kicking out a preview to the projector indroduced some sync issues, but the size was just so awesome that it was worth it. And fader automation just rocks.

A long tale of woes led up to the mix, including staying up almost all night, and having to Frankenstein an external hard drive. So it ended up not being a "final" mix. Tech issues lost me some time, and not all of the fx got in. The score also hasn't been delivered yet. Very glad I built a few extra days into my schedule in case stuff like this came up. What we have so far is sounding very good, though.

Thanks for coming and helping out, Evin! Things went a lot faster with you there.

That is one sweet setup... I don't care if it's not personal gear, I'm still green with tech envy.:-Cry(DBG):

Thanks!

I've been impressed with everyone on this project. It has been a fun team to work with. I'm glad that you are learning something- I hope to provide a little more insite on the DVD special features- Like choices made in editing - a comparison of the first edit to the locked edit.

Update - Score / Vfx

Update - Score / Vfx

The score should be finalized (I'm downloading ti now from Sid). He has done a great job in developing it, and making the needed changes- I continue to be impressed with his work.

Mark is finishing up the VFX, which I'm looking forward to seeing!

Coordinating everything from Japan has been interesting- internet access has been better then I hoped, but it hasn't always been consistent.

Yeah, that big screen in the back looks great! I'm jealous that you get to see the movie before the rest of us do. I guess I just have to wait until the big downloading day. Got my portable drive and will download at the hospital where the connection is blazing fast.

Hey Ryan, how is your time in Japan? I hope all is well.

And I have to say that I am jonesing for that set-up on the previous page myself!

Nice!

Good luck, guys!

Ryan, glad to see it all went well. I can't wait to see the final product. Sweet setup you guys had. I even have tech envy

My impressions of SEMELE:

well shot, often beautiful composed frames. the steadicammed frame had a wonderful “floating/handheld” quality at times. the editing was competently executed. only occasionally, was I distracted by mis-matched rhythms between shots. unfortunately, the ADR was a big distraction. I’d be eager to know if this was planned from the beginning or out of necessity. makes it almost impossible for me to critique the performances. the story was very well executed. plot points and turns were revealed in interesting ways. but on the whole everything felt a little too familiar. like this was territory that other films had covered many times over. nonetheless, great work. you should be proud.

I will comment as two people.

1 (as a dp) The camera movemnt, and framing were SPOT on. there was a definite "eye" behind all the compositions. they melded together and you dont notice edits. it was thought out and well edited. Great flow. The acting was good, the set was nice. Over all great. BUT,..... The whole movie was out of focus. Especially out doors.

2: Movie goer. Looked like holly wood to me. I have no complaints. But the russian had a funny accent, so that kinda killed it a little. but whatever. :)

Great work. i liek it.
