235 Studios Presents: SEMELE

Thought I'd give my self a little bump before I went and started helping with the Thanksgiving Day Events - it is at our house!

Uh, I am a little speechless.... I came over to see what was going on with the folks of the Great NorthWest and I feel like a senior citizen!!!

You "kids" be nice to your elders, now.... ya hear?!

I hope that a great Thanksgiving was had by all!

BTW... Ryan, you and Norm confuse the crap out of me! You casts are the same, your banners have the same Black and White thing going on.... Do you guys plan this or does it just happen?

Good luck and Happy ThankGuinness!

Norm had wanted to audition for the short originally, then he thought it would be interesting to have the same cast for both of our films - if he landed the role. So when he got the part, he cast Reid in his film too. It should be interesting to see the same actors in two very different films.

As for the posters that is kind of a coincidence. I was feelign uninspired when I went to design the new poster and the new banner. Jerry Turner is working on some graphics for a computer scene for me, and he created that map you see in the background, and I knew I wanted to use it for the Poster & Banner. Having that graphic & still feeling uninspired I went over to: http://www.apple.com/trailers/ to check out various other posters to get some inspiration. Posters that caught my eye were: Notes on a Scandal, Perfume, and The Prestige. If you look at these posters you can see where each one influenced the poster I created. So while I did not use Norm's poster as an influence, it ended up being rather similar anyway. And since he did design his first, and I had seen it previously, I'm sure that some of the elements of his were lurking around in my subconscious.

So that's my story, and I'm sticking to it. :)

Well, I certainly enjoy hearing how the concept came about. Very cool.

And that will be fun to see the same cast in two different films... actually, that should be a lot of fun!

I am looking forward to both of these products from the Great Northwest.

Make sure you leave plenty of room for me to wheel myself in!

Will be using the Redrock Micro 35mm adapter - M2 on the film.
I am excited to say that the great people over at Redrock will be able to get the M2 in time to me before the shoot. I spoke with them earilier this week and they said that there would not be a problem getting it to me by the end of December, as they are currently only 2 weeks out in orders. I then received an email from them confirming that my order had been shipped on Wednesday, and according to FedEx, it should be here by next Wednesday! I'm very excited as this will give me even more time to test the unit out before filming begins. Great service form Redrock!

Head Shots of the actors uploaded. Check the first page.

Painting of the set - Phase 01 of the set construction. Check the first page.
I'm converting my garage into a "set" to use for one of the locations for the film, so far, it has just been cleaned up and painted. Evin will be coming over at a later date to build a temporary / fake wall to complete the set. And then the final set dressing will be added!

Cool updates, Ryan! Love the poster, headshots/titles, and banner ... looking good. It'll also be cool to see the progress of that one set!

Thanks much appreciated. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress as well. Hope to do some shopping this weekend for the set dressing.

Sweet. I likey. Nice transformation of the garage! (What an odd shape!)

Nice poster. Looks very slick. If you're looking for feedback, I wouldn't have the trenchcoat in the right arm of Rebecca. I would either keep with Rebecca's arm or dissolve to the black.

If you're not looking for feedback.... disregard what I just posted!

That is just half of the Garage- and yes it is a rather odd shape, which is why I need another wall built for the set, hopefully it will make it a litlle less odd .... and it will close it down some, as teh two car size is to large for what I want for this set.

As for the poster- thanks for the input- always welcome, I like feed back / input.

Cool.

I really do like the poster, it is just something that catches my eye and goes, "huh?" :)

But the world is full of opinions!

Your film has got my attention and I will be following!!!

Hey Ryan, why are you making a set in your garage instead of just using a real room?

Several reasons (In no particular order):

1. Fake blood stains carpets, and no one is willing to let me stain there carpet, and I do not want to pay for replacement carpet. (Yes I can be cheap :) )

2. Control, control, control :) . I can paint it how I want it, dress it how I want it, light it how I want it, and film how I want it. Since one of the walls will be moveable I will not have to figure out work arounds for angles that might not work do to space, as I can just move the wall out of the way if needed. I know that several of these things you can do when using a real room - but you just do not have the same control, as you have to consider issues like will they let you paint, how long can you have the room set up for, also what it you need a light in a specific spot, but it would require attaching something to the wall - they may not be up for you drilling into their walls. All of these issues dissapear when you use a set.

3. I was inspired by JDS who turned his own appartment inside out for his shorts. After seeing the BTS of what he had done, I thought to myself- I have a garage where I can do whatever I want with it, why am I not using that to my fullest ability? It is not a sound stage by any means- but it is a fairly large open space that I should be using.

4. Finally, and probably most importantly, my wife fully supports this option. While she was willing to let me use our bedroom to film in, she was not very excited about it. The garage however, she was excited about and is completely on board with that idea. So when choosing in-between an option that she is ok with, or an option she is excited about, it makes for an easy choice to go with the one she is excited about. :)

So that is why I'm going with creating a set for the film. And I have to admit as well, that it does sound cool to say we'll be filming on the set we created for SEMELE. (Even if it is only in my garage.)

Yept there are a lot of opinions out there. I like feed back / input for two reasons-
1. It shows me where my weaknesses are, and allows me to be able to stregnthen them.
2. It makes me reconsider a choice made, and even if I do not agree with the feed back / input, it helps me to more clearly articulate why that choice was made. (I'm a firm believer that you cannot please everyone. And some choices that are made artisticly will work well for some and not for others. But I think the trick is knowing why you made the choice, and why you think it works.)

UPDATE - Set Dressing & Storyboards

UPDATE - Set Dressing & Storyboards

Update - 11/26/06
Set Dressing Secured
I did some shoping at Goodwill for various set pieces / dressing. Goodwill is a great place to get good props, art work, and other set dressing on the cheap. The trick is to just check in from time to time, as new stuff is always arriving. Then you can always donate the items back to Goodwill when you are done and recoupe coem of teh cost through a tax write off. :)

Storyboards began
After hearing about the added features of FrameForge 3D from Mark and their crew, I decided to crack open the copy of the program I have, and play with it some more. While I haven't upgraded to the full version yet, the demo is working great - even though it is limited. I have really enjoyed being able to test out various camera setups, lens settings, and blocking issues prior to filming. It is allowing me to see problems, and come up with new ideas in terms of framing before principle photography has even begun. VERY HELPFUL / USEFUL.

Ok, I know this update is a bit late, but here it is anyway. :)

UPDATE - Crew Secured & Location Secured (kind of)

UPDATE - Crew Secured & Location Secured (kind of)

Update - 11/28/06

Crew Secured
Keelie Duncan has joined the team and will be lending her makeup talents. I met with her today, and was impressed by her portfolio, as well as her can do attitude.

Location Secured
Well- lets say it is 90% secured. I've gotten an ok from the Police department, and an ok from the parks department, I'm just waiting on the parks department to get back to me with the proper forms that I have to fill out, as well as if I will need any insurance, or any permit fees. (He is thinking over those issues this week.) I've had a good experience with him, and I'm hoping for the best. I'd really like to use this location as it is within 1 mile of the Semele Set (My garage), and would cut travel time considerably. I'm still planning on a 1 day (LONG DAY) shoot.

No prob, glad it is keeping you interested. I hope to be as open as possible, without giving away the film inorder to help others out. That way hopefully others, especially new-be's can get an idea of what is being done out there. And maybe even spark other creative ideas from more experienced folks. (Like the idea I got from Mark & Ted's thread about FF3D.)

While I want to win as much as the next guy- or maybe a little more - in the end it is about refining our skills, and making each production that much better.

Hey Ryan, updates sounding good!

I love this FF3D program. Very cool. It really seems to enlighted me to many aspects that may be problematic down the road. Just being able to visualize the scene with models. So neat.

Good luck! Feel free to share some "FF3D" grabs! Maybe we can do the same.
