I know mud idea are pretty mixed, but I'm one of those who get more mud with the kit lense. Can I assume that every other lumix lense is gonna give me some?

Espcially if I use autofocus with them (I have the 20mm in mind) ?

Thanks, and feel free to share idea about is I should take a little follow focus rig and use other lense, or if I should stay with the 20mm and use autofocus.

(I mostly do events/sport videography)

Well, the idea of the kit lens causing more mud is one that I still haven't been able to pin down. I'm trying to come up with a definitive, repeatable, observable test that will answer it definitively.

I tend to think there's no way that the kit lens is contributing to mud, in and of itself.

What I DO think could be causing it, is autofocus. Autofocus by its very nature will play havoc with a long-GoP compression system. Any slight adjustment in focus can cause a massive percentage of pixel change in the frame.

So for those who think they're getting more mud with the kit lens, my question is: are you using autofocus? Try the kit lens on MF, next to a manual lens, and see how the mud compares. I bet a nickel they'll be the same, and that it's autofocus that's causing any increase in mud.

I'd also say that as the kit lens relatively small aperture means it has a deeper DOF therefore keeping more details in the frame sharp which can also contribute to 'mud'. I pretty much shot at f/2.8 or wider all the time with my Canon FDs and see hardly any of it even with 1080p mode.

Thanks alot for you inputs guy.

So, if I'd use a 20mm without autofocus i'd be ok I guess.
