2008 demo reel

70+ views and no one has anything to say, good or bad?

just looking for input where and how i can improve on the reel. i'm pretty stoked on it but not 100% there, but i just can't put a finger on it.

I thought it was alright, the music doesn't work at all in my opinion. What kind of client are you aiming for? I don't find it looks all that pro either, a little bit of color correction goes a long way.

That said, I really like that shot of the DJ and the smoke as well as what appeared to be a Red Bull after party venue.

Just my opinion.

Great demo reel, composed of well-taken footage and excellent editing. Only I believe your clients would appreciate an HD version, remember, they probably get multiple offers, and you want to stand out with superior excellence.

More improvement suggestions: while most shots were excellent and relevant, some shots seemed pointless, and much out of place. I remember a guy doing some basic trick with his skateboard, then looked at the camera. I believe that if you're into extreme video making, then you have to aim at constant action! Don't give your clients a sole moment to take a breath between the shots!

Moreover, a major problem, for me, was the music. I welcome and understand your choice of standing out with the music, and not going for the usual rock music stuff as overly used for extreme videos, yet I believe you went a little out of balance with the choice of music that portrays the last days of the Ancient History period. If you're still into violating some copyrights without going banal at all (or maybe it's considered fare use since the reel itself is not sold?), then I believe that action tracks by film composers John Powell or David Arnold would do very well. I would suggest that you look for a little more treble-ish music, the video as is seriously misses those high frequencies (all in all, Woad To Ruin can be said to use the lower and middle ranges more then the treble one). And even after selecting a great treble-ish track that flows with the extreme action and fits it like a glove, I would still EQ-ize the music slightly (and carefully), to occupy the tweeter a little bit more. Not really rocket science, you can do it, too.

I know, re-editing the reel for the second time to make it fit another piece of music seems painful, but will you have those thoughts aside, and see it as an opportunity to make an even better reel!

I hope my suggestions are helpful to you,

All the best,

I agree with what everyone is saying. The music didn't really cut it for me. Some shots seemed thrown in to take up time, and the color correction thing is a good idea... however, some stuff looks like it's perfect for live t.v. which might be you are going for.
Generally, really good material... The comments are how to get you reel to look better and not so if you have good content because you do.

I had a question....

About half way through you have this effect where a skateboarder is in the air. Everything is out of focus and then only him comes into focus and then the rest of the image. It looks cool. I'm wondering how you did that?
