2004 reel

Re: 2004 reel

dude, reel looks great man. really nice. digin the track as well. i like the opening titles as well, really sweet..has a hallowman title sequence sort of feel.

well done!

Re: 2004 reel

Very pro. Please do not tell me that all of that was shot with the DVX. :) The compositing work is especially 'to die for'.

How do you get such clean silhouettes? I have a short project where I have actors on a green screen, and I'd like to create the same kind of effect...

Re: 2004 reel

I caught this on your site a few days ago, nice work...

*cough I Robot cough*

EDIT: :D

Re: 2004 reel

hahaha yeah, huge coughs! i started working on that title treatment just to see if it could be done in AE, and then i kinda liked it, and, well, i'm lazy at heart so i didn't want to start a whole new treatment from scratch.

almost all of the video in the reel was shot with the DVX or a sony trv900.

green-screen wise... there's two pieces in there that involve keying. winterfresh was shot in digibeta and keyed/roto'd for me, the her space holiday kids & adults were shot on the sony trv900 and done using the most basic AE keying tools. it helps to blur the footage a little bit before keying it, especially with DV. you lose a little detail, but hopefully it was the detail you didn't want (steppy edges and the like). bear in mind that it's a lot easier to get a key to look good when you're working with silhouettes than anything else :)

Re: 2004 reel

Jason, this is a very professional looking reel. I was very impressed with your technical skill. The only minor thing I'd say is that some of the effects you used are quite repetitive...not a big deal because the overall tempo of the image and sound keep it going.

Anyway, great job. I particularly liked the dolly/car shots with the silhouette overlays.

Oh, and you should consider it an honor that Barry chimed in. I rarely see anything from him in this section ;)

Re: 2004 reel

What a phenomenal mixture of talent and creativity (they rarely end up in the same person to this extent). I'm floored!! Could you tell us what software you used for the various parts? I really liked the glowing finger-tip trail. It just looked so right. Also, I feel dumb for asking this question, but did any of those t-shirts have actual images printed on them? On the elevator shot I could see corner markings. But damn it looked so f'ing good.

"What a phenomenal mixture of talent and creativity"

Man that truly just says it all!

That and WOW!

Re: 2004 reel

heh yeah the shirts just had corner markers on them to track to. i was going to stay up for a week straight and remove them, but people were telling me they weren't noticeable on casual viewing. they still annoy me now.

soooo what software... it's all final cut for edit & colour, then after effects & 3rd party plugins for the compositing and vfx:

intro: AE w/ particular & knoll light factory
kodak capture: AE w/ conoa
dealership (t-shirts): AE, knoll light factory, illustrator, photoshop
winterfresh: AE, particular
citizens (light trails): AE, particular
microsoft: AE, 3d stroke
luxxury (cartoons): AE, illustrator. wish i'd had light factory back then
HSH (kids & string): AE, 3d stroke, illustrator

thanks for the compliments, i'm glad people are liking the work... but hold onto your hats. next year will blow doors :)

Re: 2004 reel

Your definitely a pro. No arguing that. Very dynamic work.

I would recommend shortening your reel about 25%. I was actually screening reels much like yours just recently and I usually knew within a minute what I was looking for.

As you probably know the market for what your doing is incredibly saturated. When I screen stuff like this I get a stack of reels and only have so much time to look at each one. Just based on my experience being on the other side of things, throw your best stuff up front in the first minute.

On the topic of motion graphics. I recently screened some work from several facilities I have been impressed with. Check it out!

THIS SITE ROCKS!

This advice (although obvious if you think of it) is worth of pulling the fiber-optic cable right to your LAN! Talk about a film school!

Thanks, natob2!

Re: 2004 reel

yeah you might be right nathan... it lags a little in the final minute or so, i spent a little too long on the HSH piece. cheers mon.

(ps: DDB? I'm at Ogilvy. We should wrassle or something, ha)
