$200 vs $550 glass

I'm looking at the Sigma and Canon 70-300 mm lens for around $200. Then there is the $550 option for the same focal lengths/aperatures.

The $550 has Image Stabilizer ... and I'm guessing the expensive one is of better quality. Question is, how much better quality? Is it noticeable? Is it worth $350 more?
 
Patssle, my answer to your question depends on how much handheld work you are doing. IS makes a difference if you're entirely handheld sans rig.

However without knowing which lenses you're specifically comparing we can't help you determine which is better quality.
