2 Questions about the 7D

Hi all,

I'm about to buy the 7d but I just had 2 questions I need help with.

1) Can I use lenses from older SLR cameras (ie non- Digital SLRs)? Do they have to be canon lenses or can they be other brands? Are there "universal" mounts that let you use any lens, or can you only use a few? As you can tell, I know little about lenses!

2) How do you sync audio if you don't have pluraleyes? It's only compatible with FCP and Vegas and I use Premiere. I'll be shooting at 25fps.

Thanks a lot.

1) Yes, most old 35mm lenses with manual aperture and focus can be used with the correct adapter.

2) If you are referring to syncing audio with something like an H4n then just during the shoot use a clap board and manually match the wave forms of the camera and recorder audio tracks. That is all Pluraleyes does, it is just automated.

In response to your second question 711 is right. Manually synching audio is actually fairly easy, if a bit time consuming. Find a good reference point, like a clap, the first snare drum of a song, any distinctive audio. line up wave forms by eye, zoom in, line up wave forms by eye, zoom in, repeat. Once your zoomed in all the way you should be less then one frame out of synch. Which is good enough. True synch only happens when SMTP is involved.

This is the same for synching two cameras (with the same frame rate), or synching audio to a camera, or synching music. If you dealing with a length of anything over ten minutes, you might have to check the synch and add or subtract a frame when needed.

For instance, Im doing a dance exercise DVD for a client right now. FIlmed with two ex1s, audio recorded with a merantz, @ 48Khz, Music at 44.1Khz.

Step one: synch cameras to eachother and create multi-clip (FCP only? not sure if vegas or others have multi)
Step Two: Synch Voice track to camera. Check synch, voice track from merantz recorder lost about 10 frames over 45 min, when compared to the video. I just deleted 1 frame after every song, but I confirmed that I was always less than a frame out of synch (in this case the camera needed to be the master, since there was two, and I wasn't as trusting in the merantz which was too old to read my 16GB CF card)
Step three: convert the music to 48Khz ( I used Quicktime to do this). Synch music. the music was 9 tracks, so I had to synch them in individually.

This is fairly typical workflow for me. When Im shooting for anything long format I will leave the cameras recording even if we are on a 5 minute break. Less video clips = editing time.

No, you can sync audio to a 24p stream as easily as a 60i stream. As long as there is a distinctive marker in the audio, the clap. Then it is pretty easy. I also like to do a clap in front of the camera so that I can also visually see my sync because I am a visual person. This also helps when aligning 2 cameras on a multi-camera shoot.

Something that should be noted here. Ironically, Canon's older lenses (FD mount) are essentially not compatible with the EOS 7D. (Really, they are physically compatible but require an optical adapter which, in most cases, would decrease image quality by an unacceptable degree).
