2 Minute Trailer for 35 Minute Short Film

Hey Guys,

Just wanted yall to check out my first trailer for my short film "A Taste of Us", a 60's period piece I wrote, directed and edited. Though I love editing, I've always dreaded doing trailers because of not knowing if I was good at it or not.

Well, I thought I'd give it my first shot so tell me what you guys think. I shot this short with 11 characters in two short days on a weekend. Had the Panny for two months now and really enjoyed using it on the short. I felt it gave us a certain production value even though our budget was under $1500 (not including the camera)

95% of what you see in the trailer was shot at night believe it or not. The DVX gave me the nice "orangey brown" tones I wanted for this, my second short. My goal is to submit it to several film festivals and possibly pitch it as a TV series to some Urban TV Networks. Who knows, right? Your feedback will be most appreciated. God Bless and Happy New Year.

SRoss

Great job, looks really good. What did you use to light the scenes?

Should have no problem taking this to the next level. ::)

Re: 2 Minute Trailer for 35 Minute Short Film

You will have NO problem taking it to the next level. It looks like you are already there. Great job. The talent is first rate. The lighting was perfect. :D

Re: 2 Minute Trailer for 35 Minute Short Film

Well Taylor Hudson, ;D

When I said next level, i meant trying to get a Network to sign on.
That truely will be the hardest part of going forward..... ::)

As far as lighting, just HMI's and Kino Flo's. Most of the lighting at the dinner table was placed outside the house and aimed to light through the windows. The look is rather "hot" in some shots but my DP assured me that the "hot" look was "in" and that they were doing this on shows like "The West Wing" and "CSI: Miami". Thanks for your feedback!

I noticed that. I liked it.

So, if I'm Taylor Hudson, then are you John Moore? LOL

Re: 2 Minute Trailer for 35 Minute Short Film

Great acting! this is what puts this into next level.

Hello triseven,

Nice trailer. And the story is also interesting. I would love to see the actual movie.

All the best

Fidel.

I liked the bleached out windows, but I wasn't certain I liked the bleached out spot on the older (main) character's collar in a couple shots. It just seemed distracting there....but when you had shots on the windows, it helped give a "look" that was clearly deliberate.

I'd really like to see the whole thing! I loved the look...and the talent is really good!

Keep us informed on what's happening with this...

That is so cool guys! Thanks for all of your positive feedback. I'm just getting the DVD made and it looks really good. I should be ready for the festival circuit shortly. I also have goals to market and distribute it through my company if it doesn't find a distributor.

I really like the camera but was a bit thrown off when they came out with the newer version so quickly. Found out about it right after I bought it.

Very Very Nice! I'll buy the DVD once its done. Maybe you can add some "behind the scenes" footage on the dvd and i'll guarantee you it'll sell like hot cakes. I'm really serious, give us about 15 to 20 minutes on settings and how you did things and dvx users will buy it just for that (at least i will). Nicely done.

Re: 2 Minute Trailer for 35 Minute Short Film

Shavar dude! I didn't know who you were until right now when i visited your website! I'm so glad you are doing this, especially with the dvx. Please keep us up to date on things. Have a good day.

Re: 2 Minute Trailer for 35 Minute Short Film

Hey Stran thanks. I certainly appreciate your feedback. It's very encouraging. I do have behind-the-scenes footage. I actually should've added the behind-the-scenes footage since I have almost 90 minutes of it. But that's a whole nother production in itself isn't it, lol?

I'll probably have to add it anyway to make it a little longer and more marketable once I get close to the distribution stage.

BTW guys, I think we need to watch out for using Sony tapes with the DVX? I did see some breakage in pixels during editing but I'm not exactly sure if it was the Sony tapes.

I had originally ordered Panasonic tapes for the shoot but they came a day late so I had to rush on shoot day to get tapes. The only kind available was the Sony tapes. Sony tapes worked excellent when shooting with my VX-2000 but I'm not exactly sure how it holds up with the DVX.

Re: 2 Minute Trailer for 35 Minute Short Film

I saw this a while ago and just wanted to say I was impressed. Totally pro looking. Also, I've seen you on TV!!!!!!! That's annoying though.

Anyhow, I've been keeping my dvx100 busy with sony tapes for about a year and haven't had any problems. I picked sony because the edit lab where I work uses sony.

Re: 2 Minute Trailer for 35 Minute Short Film

Very nice! The acting was very good. Not the choice of font I'd use for the trailer tho. Didn't match the style of the piece IMHO.

Re: 2 Minute Trailer for 35 Minute Short Film

You're right Jive! The fonts in the trailer were a little contemporary. I usually don't miss a beat so everything in this movie has a purpose. The fonts in the opening and end credits of the actual movie correctly does fit the movie though. For the trailer, I wanted something different, something a little more contemporary to remind me where my next project is headed. Just had to get out of the 60's for a minute. It was more a personal thing but I guarantee ya when you've been lookin' at "Bookman Old Style" for two months in the cutting room, you can't help but to want to change your font to something else, lol!
