2:35

hello, i was wondering. If i, change height of footage in track motion section, for example... from 720x576 change height to 720x428(2:35), does it technically correct to do this? Becouse i get pretty good results.

If you want to change the aspect ratio of the footage, you should do it in pan/crop, not track motion. Changing the aspect ratio in track motion distorts the image.

allright, but then i crop, i want to render without black bars. If i render croped footage, it renders with black bars even if I render with 2:35 size(720x428).
What if, i render non croped footage 720x428, does it distorts image?

With the PAL widescreen PAR, it's close.

Dylanas, what do you want to render FOR? If it's for the Web, you can render as any dimension you want, mostly. Render with square pixels at (obviously) a ratio of 2.35 width to 1 height.

If it's for DVD, you will always have the black bars.

Pixels are NOT always square
Pixels are NOT always square
Pixels are NOT always square
Pixels are NOT always square
Pixels are NOT always square

... Thanks David. I never work in anything but square, so I tend to forget.

Take the width of the screen (720) divide by 2.35, and you have your answer. This works for any other format as well... 1.85, 2.40, 1.78, 1.33, etc.

Yeah, but Pal widescreen width is 1024 ?(square pixels) becouse then pixels are 1.4568 size its 720...
I am right?

OK. I cropped the footage. But then i render it still got black bars. I am getting desperate :D
Or, What if i render my footage(not touched) to 720x306 ? do i get distort image?

Does your render frame size match your crop frame size?

Are you getting black bars on the top and bottom or on the sides?

What are you rendering to? Some formats actually won't let you set exact dimensions; the numbers might have to be multiples of 4 or 16 or something like that. If you try to set a different dimension, it'll change automatically.

i don't think you can crop the black bars in Vegas....i know you can in Sorensen Squeeze...i've tried in Vegas...never did find a solution.

You just need to make sure that your crop in pan/crop, your project settings, and your render settings are all set to the exact same dimensions and PAR. There are some exceptions to that, but since you're having issues, try that first. It should be a no-brainer to crop without black bars in Vegas, I do it all the time. In fact, it's pretty easy to pan-and-scan while you do it using keyframes in the pan/crop tool, in this case I assume you are originating with HD footage, so the pan-and-scan would be moving the 235 frame up and down within the HD frame.

I'm sorry if this is off topic, but I think my question has to do with aspect ratio also..of late I have seen few commercials and music videos where the people and things in the clip seem to have a "tall and skinny" look to them, is this part done in post?

You can do that in post, sure.

I've seen a Lego/Duplo commercial recently which is run as 4:3, but it's squeezed 16:9 and the picture is distorted that way (tall & skinny). I've seen it run that way on different networks, so it's odd.

ok..thanks david, so i was thinking right, of late i have seen that in a couple of music videos also, i do like the look..so the best way to do it in vegas keeping in mind im shooting 16:9 720p mode on the gh1? thanks for any info.
