That's effectively what my Anamorphic 1920x810 Cinemascope Patch does in MJPEG mode, with the added bonus of natively recording an anamorphic 2.35:1 image for you! With this patch, what you see framed in the viewfinder is exactly what you get:

I second the OP. Lpowell: yes, your patch is great, but the one major downside is that we can't shoot @ (AHCHD) 24p with it. :( Plus, we need to use an anamorphic adapter.... It be nice to just have a hard matte grid solution for the gh1(3) or gh2. I now only use one piece of gaff tape on the top since I can use the single "custom" grid line to set the lower 2.39 bar. But still... it'd be great to get rid of gaff tape on the lcd altogether!

Understood, and I know I'm not making it any easier by scooping up the few anamorphic bargains that show up on ebay:

Unfortunately, there's not much I can do on the AVCHD front, but I can tell you how to get 24p out of the MJPEG encoder: I simply reset the video's frame rate to 23.976 in Adobe CS5's Interpret Footage dialog (and repitch the audio to match). While you'd think a 20% slow-motion effect would look a bit unrealistic, I've found that with amateur performers, it often tones down their nervous energy. :)

i stuck a LCD screen protector on the GH1 screen and with a permanent fine line marker drew two horizontal guide lines, i traced footage using lpowell's patch to get the lines in the right place.

1. buy a mobile phone screen guard.

2. cut it to fit your screen & stick the bad boy on.

3. use the custom guideline and put the horizontal to the very bottom of the screen... then press up 28 times... now draw your first permanent marker line.

4. now put it to the top and press down 28 times, draw your second line.

5. turn off the guideline function.

now you can to work within the 2.35:1 lines knowing what will get cropped in post. primitive but works a treat
