2:35:1 overlay

I am shooting a film this month and I plan to shoot 4:3 and crop to 2:35:1 in post. Can somebody please let me know how much of the LCD I should cover from the top and from the bottom to ensure 2:35:1. I have tried to research this and can't find anything. Thanks.

There's this:

Also, like John said, You can do it in your NLE.

Drag a white .jpg (I know photoshop has 720x480 video size templates) into your NLE. Crop that at 2:35 then play it out to your camera and then tape off the sections on the LCD you wont be using. With a nice white backdrop you can get pretty accurate.

What do you guys (and gals) recommend to use for actually covering the LCD? I saw one post about clear tape (so you can see what's outside the frame, while still being mindful of your cropped framing) but the idea of any kind of tape on the LCD seems unwise. Is there a special kind I should look for? Thanks.

i made a tool out of hard paper then metal that would be a refrence bars and make it slide on to the LCD screen. then i had a refrence to go by i love it.

Thanks for the tips. Also, I don't think scotch tape over the lcd is a good idea. you can tape the edges of a transparent overlay after it's been cut to size. That's what I will probably do.

I went to that website and it looks like a pretty cool idea. But, how do I get in touch with them. The website has no information except what it does. Help!

You can also buy the 16:9 overlays from Rush at EVS. They look pretty cool and have a handy little tab in one corner to make them easy to take off.

I read on a forum somewhere to use a gel (ND .9 or a CTB) instead of tape to cover the LCD. It wont leave residue on your LCD and you can still see through it.

patrickj,
I wouldn't use electrician's tape on your LCD, that adhesive is nasty to remove.
Stick with a product made for that purpose .
Hope this helps.

To capture 2.37 aspect at the highest resolution, get a 16:9 lens and set the DVX's 16:9 to crop (not squeezed as this will double squeeze with the lens) and in your NLE software set the captured footage as 16:9 for correct editing.

Ahh, I was guessing.

I marked mine in (just the lines) w/ a fine point CDR marker (memorex, darker than a sharpie). As I don't mind a permanent solution (preferred it), works great for me.
