2:35:1 acceptable for festival screening?

I ve been hearing conflicting answers to this question. I am shooting a feature and I am currently framing for both 1;85 and 2:35 aspect ratio. I would prefer to just shoot one format (2:35 my favorite) I am shooting at standard 16X9 for insurance since it is the common format. My question is in film festival screenings is 2:35 an acceptable aspect ratio? I ve heard from two people who told me that 2:35 is wrong if you intent to show your work on a big screen. However i am under the impression that bigger movies are cropped from their original aspect ration to get the wide screen aspect ration. I dont know why it would be any different from this film.

Or should i stick to shooting both aspect rations?

Thanks in advance.

well, chances are the projected screening resolution, if it's being done digitaly, is 1.85:1

You can matte your image to haev a 2.40:1 ratio, but it needs to be in 185 aspect to play properly. Matte to your hearts desire.

2.40:1 and 1.85:1 are the primary theatrical aspect ratios in the United States. I would stop taking advice from whomever told you otherwise. they are misinformed.

Hey ZAK (big fan of your work by the way)

What about what papa said about digital projection needing the footage to be shot on 1:85 to be shown accurately?

thanks

p.s

since you seem to favor 2:35:1 have you ever seen your work digitally projected on the big screen?

haha! thanks. :)

well, there are a number of variables. in your case, to project digitally the source would have to be 16x9 for 720 or 1080 HD. and if you're making a 2K master, the aspect ratio is Academy Ratio -- 1.33:1 -- which is the same as theatrical film prints, which are either matted to 1.85:1 or use an anamorphic system to achieve 2.40:1.

but that's a whole other conversation so i'm going to speak only to digital projection and say that just like theatrical, the frame (either 16x9 for HD or 1.33 for 2K) is matted to exhibit the intended aspect ratio of 1.85:1 or 2.40:1 while the theatrical screen's curtains are adjusted to shape the screen to the appropriate aspect ratio.

the ONLY place where 16x9 is a standard aspect ratio is for broadcast to your TV or home video. but even there, films are matted to their intended aspect ratio.

i have seen my 2.40:1 work projected theatrically, from a 1080/24p HDCAM master. and you can too if you attend the DVXFEST screening here in LA on the 25th of July.

cool i will be there. will you be screening model photgrapher? or heart of now?

where can i find the details?
