2:2 pull down !!!!

In the HVX demo DVD they menyion for PAL countries at 1080i with a 25p capture a 2:2 pull down !!! I have never heard mention this 2:2 pull down on this forum. Is it worse than 24p capture with 2:3 or 2:3:3:2 pull down?????

It just means one "film" frame (25p) recorded into two "video" fields (50i). It's the way 25p is recorded into a 1080i stream, and is in fact how the DVX100 records 25p for PAL.

Nothing to worry about!

so in pal countries we do not need those other "pull down" (2:3 and 2:3:3:2)since we do not have 24p?? Is the pal hvx more restricited in his/her possibilities than the NTSC version????

Cees, your posts always seem on the verge of panic. Can you ramp it down a little?

You have no pulldown in PAL territories because of the difference in frame rates. PAL countries use 50hz, NTSC countries use 60hz. Pal countries use 25P, US countries use 24P. 25 goes into 50 very easily. 24 does not go into 60 very easily, hence we have to have all sorts of workarounds like 2-3 and 2-3-3-2/24PA pulldown. You PAL folks have it easier.

You also get a higher-res standard definition mode; you get 720x576 whereas we get 720x480. You also get a higher-definition compression codec; you get 1440x1080 whereas we get 1280x1080.

We get 30P, you don't.

There are tradeoffs everywhere. But I think the PAL version has plenty of advantages, and nothing to panic about (as evidenced by !!! and ???)

PAL > NTSC

Though seriously, for some reason I really like the term 2:2 pulldown. I can see myself having a lot of fun dicussing it with people :)

Hey we have 2:2 pulldown as well in 30P. We are not left out totally but it just works differently when working torward a film goal. Many guys here that are shooting for broadcast release have shoot at 30P so that their editors don't get confused in the 2:3 pulldown. I mean it would be nice if it was one unified Video world but its not. 2:2 just means that 2 fields go into making one frame and that the next frame is 2 fields into one frame and so on and so forth.

Best,

Jan
