1DC: 1DC Disappointment

Just want to start by saying that I love the 1DC for its video abilities.

But, I also rely on it as a still camera, and there are 2 things that really bother me for the type of shooting I do -- slow AF in low light and very limited auto-ISO shutter speed choices.

Now, Canon has realized this limitation and is going to fix these things -- but only on the 1Dx, not the 1DC. Firmware version 2 for the 1Dx will not be available for the 1DC. I contacted Canon directly about this and they stated "the EOS-1DX firmware update is only applicable to the EOS-1DX camera. I am sorry about any confusion."

I realize the 1DC is a "cinema" camera but its high cost was, to me, justifiable because it serves as a high-end stills camera as well.

Does anyone have other info that might suggest that the improvements in the 1Dx will make there way into the 1DC

If that is the case I feel the same as you!!!

Still the Customer service do not let me UpDate my 1DC to 1.3 firmware. they say there is bug and is not ready!!! I am still using the version 1

Canon did boast it is a 1DX with 4K abilities.

But if they give me dual pixel LV instead I will be more happy.

Just got mine back from servicing. Missed it. One of my friends and I talked about the appeal of the 1d-c, and that is "shooting". It is so easy to bring along and shoot. Never have to worry about iso3200, never have to worry about DR for the most part.

The growing divide between the 1D-X and 1D-C is a bit worrying to watch. Especially considering their relationship. Hopefully Canon is learning how to make this niche better. In the meantime, it is very frustrating.

I cannot imagine how it would feel to be a stills shooter lurred in by the 24fps 4k shooting, and then getting no 1D-X updates.

Make sure you call the marketing and sales people and tell them your concerns. Also call and write Canon Cine.

Thanks for the advice. Anyone know how to get in touch with marketing, sales and Canon Cine?
Best to call and write.

You can also direct them to the 1DC user thread here on dvxuser: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?309966-1D-C-Users

Don't forget these people also have careers and are often times on linked in too. I haven't gone that route. Depends on your dedication. Some are regional, but perhaps have more upward influence than the customer support people. They can also point you to an appropriate source.

Being unhappy with products we cannot make ourselves is frustrating. It is nice that we have consumer buying power behind us, but it is not always easy to have your voice heard by manufacturers. I have heard name cinematographers complain too. It is sad to see such an other wise great human achievement, like the modern dslr, be held back by focus groups, buzz words, and marketing departments. The 1DC is a great camera not meeting its marketing campaign. But it is also a 1st gen product, in a way. My feeling is, if we are going to spend $12k on a camera, and not give our feedback to the company, then one does not need to be complaining about it on a forum, where it may only be seen but by a few hundred random camera users. At least talk to the Cine EOS guys.

In the meantime, here is a cool 1DC project for your inspiration: http://jalopnik.com/meet-a-japanese-gangster-and-his-flashing-neon-lamborgh-866158240

I don't see the cause for alarm...?

Of course you can't apply a 1Dx firmware to the 1Dc. The development cycles for the two cameras are not aligned and the teams are surely different.

I am totally expecting these 1Dx upgrades to trickle over to the next 1Dc firmware upgrade. Why wouldn't they?

I was expecting this too, until Canon told me otherwise. They also said "While the EOS-1D C is similar to the EOS-1D X, the firmware for the cameras are not interchangeable."

Yes. But you already knew this. They just told you that you can't take the 1Dx firmware and load it onto a 1Dc—which of course you can't.

They didn't say that the features just introduced in the 1Dx firmware won't be included in the next 1Dc firmware, whenever it's due. And even if they did say that, it won't mean anything since the person you got on the phone probably couldn't say how to enable exposure bracketing on a 1Dc, even if their life depended on it. That is to say, that person probably has no clue what the 1Dc is, how it operates, and what to expect from future firmware updates.

True, but they explicitly stated that there are currently no plans to provide the 1Dx updates on the 1DC (and I pushed them on it). I hope you're right that they eventually do this, but as of now, I can't plan on it.

I find this to be the case. Often the reps and support are not fully up to date as an owner operator.

Well, what you say certainly doesn't lend hope, but for me it doesn't take away much either.

"Currently no plans to...", to me, is a blanket statement for "at this time I have no information about…".

I think people on the phone like this are pretty drilled in how to respond. You might get lucky and have a good conversation, but too many times they just don't have the needed competence to answer with confidence. Understandable, considering the numerous products and services.

We'll see I guess.

FWIW, I can tell you that Canon is a very formal and cautious company when it comes to making statements about new products, features or firmware updates.

Canon like the other big boys wont tell you about future plans regarding their products. They just don't do that.

I am worry when will there be a next firmware upgrade?

Do they mean it is not included in the current upgrade

Is just a piece of gear with plenty of room for improvement.
