1DC: 1DC BANDING - Is it still there?

Hello

I'm a Red Epic user, very interested in the 1DC as a lightweight and low-light alternative.
Id like to know if the old Banding issues remain or if Canon has made any Firmware to fix that?

Is there any workaround and has anyone found tricks to 'never' have them on their footage?

Please share!

George

Surely it wouldn't be that hard for them to do a tiny 10bit upgrade to it?? Any ISO guidelines that effectively guarantee no banding?

I've only seen banding on very flat surfaces, like grey walls in a studio and such.
With nature, people and outdoors I had no issues.
This has to do more with the codec than the 8bit though.

I see it on walls in what could be considered run n gun situations where we are moving very quickly, like in a hospital scenario where space is limited and they won't allow us to bring in lights.

James might disagree, but I'd say there is no banding to speak of.

First you have to film in a certain kind of light on a certain kind of surface, and then you have to look for it.

To me, that last part is key (having to look for it). I have not seen banding in any of my footage and I do grade a bit. I might actually have seen it, but then I completely disregarded it on a subconscious level.

Aliasing, moire, and 6-bit banding that you have to dither away... those are problems. 8-bit 422 in a 500+ Mbit/s mjpeg codec—not so much.

There's no real problem here. Unless you're the kind of guy who, when he sees a hammer laying on a table, always get the urge to hit himself on his head with it.

wow.. the whole reason i was intereste in the 1DC was for situations where i cant bring lights.. kinda kills the whole low-light purpose for me..
Perhaps ill wait and try the Dragon update...

I work with available light most of the time. You won't find a better low light camera than the 1Dc anywhere close to this portability.
