1DC: 1DC and Q7

I'm wondering about the new 4K pro res recording capabilities of the Q 7 .
Has anyone shot 4K pro res into the recorder? Does it make the files sizes more manageable in post?
just curious because the big draw back with this camera are the huge file sizes . And, this looks like it could be a reasonable solution.
Thanks,

The 1DC can not output 4K over HDMI. Only way to get 4K is internally to the CF Cards. I've also never found the MotionJPEG Codec too cumbersome.

Now if you're talking about the C500 to Odyssey 7Q ProRes, now THAT is a very nice workflow over the RAW .rmf files.

Yup no 4K through HDMI. HDMI is limited to 1080p 4:2:2 8bit RGB. But there's a little secret, when you set the camera to 4K (1.3x crop) the signal output through the hdmi is insanely sharp 1080p (perhaps because it's a full sensor readout at 1.3x crop). This is the highest quality 1080p you can get out of the 1DC, even markedly sharper than the already sharp s35 mode.

Making use of this feature is requires a 300$ Ninja star, basically any external recorder not a 7Q. So the 7Q isn't really needed for the 1Dc. You can still use it as a great 7" monitor with focus/exposure assist and a 1080p recorder. Still a great gadget, just don't count on recording 4K ProRes or bypassing the MJPEG codec. It's a very similar codec in terms of quality to ProRes anyway, just needs computer power to edit, transcoding the files to ProRes is post is pretty easy and gives easy to edit 4K ProRes files.

When I import my mjpeg into FCPX they are immediately, and automatically, transcoded to ProRes 422 by FCPX in the background. I can start to mark up, or keyword, footage before it's even off the memory card. If I like, FCPX can also create a 2k ProRes 422 Proxy file for portability.

All of this is automatic and very quick. I then often take the "optimized" newly generated ProRes 422 files and overwrite my original mjpegs. I let the ProRes 422s become my new masters.

File sizes are almost identical and there is no visual IQ loss. It's almost as if I shot ProRes to begin with.
