170 Opinions

Hi,

I've been lurking around these forums for years with the intention of educating myself on the pros and cons of buying a HVX200 over an HDV camera. I've been waiting for P2 Cards to have enough capacity to work with and I believe that the time has finally come - although at a hefty price. Then I heard about a new HVX coming out and so I waited again with fingers crossed that it would be PAL and NTSC switchable. Now I'm waiting for a decision on why the 171 is and the 170 is not. I still can't understand why the european model is switchable and the north american model is not - doesn't make any sense to me and no one from Panasonic seems willing to explain this as far as I can tell.

I was in Germany recently (I'm Canadian and living in Vancouver) and had a chance to finally try the 171 out and an HVX 200a (or whatever it's called in the EU), and the picture quality actually surpassed my expectations - we had it wired directly out the HDSDI port to a monitor. Even in low light, I thought the noise wasn't too bad and better than what I was expecting. For the price, I was happy with the results.

Apart from the great picture (the LCD sucks though), the second first hand thought was how cheap it felt to handle. Compared to the Sony cameras, the build quality of the 171 seemed very flimsy. I was comparing it to a Sony Z7 camera which felt way better but I didn't like the picture nearly as much. Plus I don't like HDV as a format. The EX1 also feels like a higher quality camera.

So my question is to people who have used the 170(1) since it's been released: what is your opinion of it's build quality and have you had any quality issues using it? (I realize that there's a 5 year warranty but still....)

Cheers, and happy new year to all.

I just got mine and havent shoot much yet. I thought the same thing at first that it feels "cheap" -- but thats something i'm willing to give up in exchange for how much lighter it is and easy to shoot with (compared to the HVX or the EX1). Once i realized the "cheap" feel is due to being a good bit lighter and easier to shoot with I got over it real quick.

Used a 200 for years, now have the 170. I do not miss the 200 at all, the 170 is so much lighter and there have been no build quality issues with mine at all.

People complained about the build quality of the DVX100, saying it was made of "plastic", until the company started showing off the die-cast magnesium chassis under the plastic panels. I wouldn't sweat the 170's durability, the 200 and 100 have been rugged beasts.

I second that. I've gone from the DVX100A to the HVX200 to the HPX170. Very happy with the latest, especially coupled with a 35mm adapter rig!

Its certainly a great CCD cam. Good color depth, cinema gammas, professional features, ergonomical, ect

And I have no qualms with the build quality.

My 170 dropped off a moving car a couple of weeks ago. Not a single problem with it. Still shoots great images.

I had a friend drop a DVX off a moving car (going about 45mphs) on the highway in Iowa last year while trying to follow a candidate's bus. Broke the handle on top, but the camera still recorded A OKAY.

Thanks - I appreciate all of you taking the time to respond. That puts my mind more at ease.... now if only Panasonic would drop the price of the 32 GB cards a wee bit.....

tell me about it. I just picked up a second 16gig card used so now i have two. but i'm going to try to get away with just using these until the prices come down even more.

In my testing of the 170, I too had reservations about several specific areas on the 170 as far as reliability. The P2 door is definitely less robust than it was on the 200 but so far, no issues. The joystick for the menus feels flimsier than the joystick on my DVX100A but so far, no issues.

I have to say, the 170 is one of the ugliest cameras on the market but who buys a camera for looks?

I am pretty confident that the 170 will hold up as well as my 100A and 200 have. Panasonic builds pretty quality stuff. And the ergonomics are leagues better than the EX1, which is a great camera but one of the most uncomfortable cameras I have ever shot with.

I don't think it's ugly =}

It didn't initially strike me that way either, but I have had two clients and another DP tell me that they think my 170 is hideously cheap and ugly looking.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder I guess. It functions well and makes me money so I personally love it but the redesign from the HVX200, to me, makes it look "cheaper".

I agree that the 170 looks cheaper and flimsier than the 200. But looks and reality are two different things -- I haven't had a single issue with my 170. Moreover, I'll take the vastly improved ergonomics and features of the 170 in exchange for slightly less of an impression any day.

Ditto and amen!

Is something afoot? I just saw a promotion on Panasonic Europe's website (I googled Panasonic Broadcast) which bundles 2 x 32 GB cards with the camera, 171E. I can't find any information on the price however. I was also looking on B&H and they list the 170 as back ordered with no time frame given. I don't want to incite the rumour police, but seems a bit odd to me. Anyone know anything more specific, and or know if this same promotion will hit North America?

Damn! For once the people in Europe look to be getting a killer deal, unless they are substantially rasing the cost. A 171 with two 32GB P2 cards would probably entice me to buy a 171, warranty be damned.

If I recall from some of our other threads on the 171, there are some pretty nice deals on the 171 to begin with from U.K. dealers, I just checked, how about $3,889.00? http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/public/view_item_cat.php?catalogue_number=panasonic_ag-hpx171

Would love to hear from someone who speaks to a dealer about this special offer, seems really almost too generous to be real.
