16x9 aspect ratio in Stills mode???

I think I've just overlooked this as I've searched the instruction manual and the camera settings several times.

In stills mode, the photos are closer to a 4x3 aspect ratio by default.

Is there a way to make the STILLS mode take on the 16x9 aspect ratio of video where there are the black bars cropping the top and the bottom?

I know my wife's cheap point and shoot Canon can do this, but I just can't seem to find the right check box on the 7D.

Thanks

I haven't gotten my hands on one, but I doubt that's an option in still mode, especially on a professional type camera like the 7D.

Why would you want to crop your image anyway? Just frame for 16:9 and edit in any photo editing program.

A lot of consumer point and shoot cameras give you the option to select a 16:9 aspect ratio for taking still photographs. This is not the case with a professional stills camera like the 7D. The aspect ratio is actually 3:2. You will have to shoot for 16:9 safe and then crop in a photo editor like Photoshop, or even Picasa.

Dang. Bummer. The reason I want 16:9 is because I do Motion graphics which these days is often put on top of Live action plates that we shoot. It's nice to be able to do Pre-Viz / stills for boards with the 7D and just have them come out of the camera at 16:9. But I guess that's not an option.

As for the 3:2 / 4:3 thing, I pretty much only work with video and graphics, so 3:2 is something out of my realm.

I still don't see the problem. Just frame for 16:9 and crop in post. This is a very basic thing to do.

What motion graphics package are you using?
