16:9 Field Monitor Question

How do I connect a Sony 16:9 field monitor to the DVX 100B? I used to hook it up to my TRV900 with an SVHS cable... It's got a million connections on the back, BNC's, etc. I'm gonna use it in a little studio setup. What's the highest quality out of the DVX 1OOB to a pro NTSC field monitor?

Thanks!

Get an RCA>BNC adapter and run BNC to the monitor. S-Video is great for short runs, but once you run it past about 10' you'll start to lose signal stability.

RCA is just a connector and has nothing to do with the signal. It's a composite signal, and I have never had any quality issues with running it down a 75 Ohm pipeline through a BNC adapter. RCA connections are used to carry lots of things: composite video, unbalanced analog audio, digital S/PDIF audio, etc. BNC is just a connector as well, and also is used for lots of things including composite video.

The quality of the signal is dependent more on the device generating the signal, and on the quality of the cable through which it flows.

yea but most rca cables you buy for cheap = shi*

That's a problem with the physical cable, not the actual signal or the type of connector. And as I recall from my previous post...

The quality of the signal is dependent more on the device generating the signal, and on the quality of the cable through which it flows.

Now, as a rule of thumb, I do not buy cheap cables. And why would I want to? By adapting the RCA output connector to a BNC connector, then sending the signal down a good-quality cable, the signal will be clean. I run my DVX to a Sony field monitor this way, and always have.

I mean, your comment really goes for just about anything, does it not? Cheap XLR cables can ruin an audio signal, yes? And even S-video down a crappy cable is going to create a crappy signal. It has nothing to do with the category of connector, just the quality of the parts (connectors and cable) used.

To get to what I think is your point, yes, composite video is not the best out there today, but it's what the DVX100 provides. I'm using it with a 9" HD LCD monitor and a 35mm adapter; it works fine for focusing, color seems fine, too. S-Video is of a lower quality, HDMI better.
