UPDATED 05/29/2010:

Got the price down quite a bit since I started.

$25 - You get (2) 24 inch rods

These are solid 6061 rods with a mill finish.

Tight tolerances. +0/-.0005

PM me if interested

There's lots of interest. The 15mm rods thread fizzed out without much being concluded. Better yet: tell us your supplier! Best thing for the community is to know where they're available, at what price (even if it's in bulk) so that we can get a better sense of what they're worth.

As for size, I'd stick with 8 inches and over.

Gary,

Your link doesn't go to a specific product. That's always the problem linking to M-C product pages. No where do I see that they have 15mm tubes in Al, stainless steel, or basic steel. They have carbon fiber in 0.58" which is 1/100" off of 15mm. Everything else comes in sizes that are too far from 0.59"/15mm.

Can you give us the product number, specifics?

cts519,

Strike while the iron is hot. There are lots of people looking for quality and good priced 15mm rods in many sizes.

Is there still a need for quality aluminum 15mm rods at a REASONABLE PRICE?
Any interest?
The cheapest 15mm substitute I've found that's easy to get hold of is chrome plumbing pipe. So on the DIY front, I think you're competing with that.

Personally, I'd rather get aluminum rods, so you have that advantage probably.

Pricing 2x 24 inch (mill finish/rms 40) $30 + shipping

These are solid 6061 rods

Going anodized raised the price too high.

I'm calling in favors to get a deal for the community. This was only possible because of the business I already send to these companies.

I called everyone I know in the industry...Nobody stocks 15mm. It is all overseas and it applies to no other sizable industry in the USA.

All these Alu rods are actually alloy and no pure aluminium. What are the ones you are using ?
15mm x 1.5mm (diameter) tubes or 15mm full bars ?
Are the tubes strong enough ?

They are 6061 alum solid bar...Yes, they are very strong for the application.

The price is now $25 for the pair plus shipping.

In EU I can find it cheaper but the S&H might be more expensive. Now I am checking to get them anodized cos it will be much better to have them protected and refined.
I found: Tube 6063-T6 and Bar 6082-T6

You think we should get bars rather then tubes ?
THX

Cast or turning them ?

Tapped holes inserts or threaded ends ?

Reason I ask is, if threaded or tapped, or bare raw bar 6061 is pretty soft and will dent easy if dropped and uncoated. Even if coated it will still dent, but I'd be more concern about yield & tensile strengths if you plan on a full setup 20" plus (matte box, FF, LCD, etc..). You'd definitely want to anodize them.

Cast? All 6061 bar is extruded. Finished to +0 / -.0005 of 15mm.

No tapped holes at this price. Price allows you to have any length you want at a reasonable price.

Anodizing does not impact tensile strength.

Price+quality rods is the motivating factor with these rods. There are many other rods on the market beyond this price range if one is looking for all the features.

Unscientific test...

I have aluminum rods from 2 big names (12 inch lengths) and my bend test with 30 lbs shows not difference between my rods. Aluminum will flex a little bit regardless of the temper rating.

Yes I know that raw bar is extruded, but meant an injection mold. There was a guy here if I remember correctly saying how he was having a mold made that had tapped holes and threaded ends. Basically to bring cost down and produce more of them quickly. I've never really heard of anyone doing this and achieving good results at home, thought it might have been you.

I wasn't saying it would improve tensile strength, but help with wear. I crammed all of that together and should have broken it up.

You'd be surprised at how they will flex once all of your gear is one them, again the rods I used at the time were 20" & 25" long.

Are you in the business ?
