Which song would you send?

I think these kinds of moves are insane. I mean, if our own history is any guide, we do NOT want to be discovered by a technologically superior race with the ability to travel here!!!!! Keep it on the DL!!!!!

Four hundred years and one day from now (assuming the aliens have supraluminal travel) leaves us plenty of time to fill sandbags and devise countermeasures.

I nominate One Eyed One Horned Flying Purple People Eater.

I love the voice of reason... been saying the same thing for years regarding SETI. Since we're still on the cutting edge of communication and space travel (from OUR own perspective) there's about 1 in a BILLION odds... that if anything else CAN receive intelligible communication from us... that we'll be even remotely on the same level. Which automatically* means they will be drastically advanced... probably beyond our comprehension... literally.

Considering how little regard the bulk of the global population has for any lower life-forms, let alone fellow human beings, I think the notion of finding intelligence, or helping it find us, and expecting a Utopian outcome... well... think about all the knowledge and social structure you want to share with a flock of chickens... now excuse me while I go eat my sandwich.

*There is a combination of mathematics and probability based on simple logic... that if you have a line the length of a football field, and ALL of human experience on earth represents the very end of that line... literally the width of a human hair... and in the last micro-micro-meter of that time-line represents the modern age... well, you're taking a pretty bold assumption that the next line over (from some other life-sustaining planet) had not only the same events shaping the development of technology, but that the development of "civilized" life either started at the same time... or was somehow stunted to put us on a level playing field. Since all of our human experience only covers the width of a human hair... let's say intelligent life from another planet somehow got it's start a couple feet back... or fifty feet back... or even one extra hair's width back.

Hell... on earth if a person doesn't share the same religion it's enough to kill that guy... and we're all HUMANS for crap's sake. If we can't communicate with HUMANS across the globe in a cohesive and civilized manner I don't see the point in trying to bring some little green men into the mix.

:nads:

Now if you're gonna' beam a song... I'd say make it something timeless and classical... I'm thinking Carmina Burana.

Ever see the movie Contact?!

They are going to be getting our radio signals first... Let's just hope Orson well's War of the worlds radio broadcast will scare them from coming our way.

That or we send Rick Astley.

Hell... on earth if a person doesn't share the same religion it's enough to kill that guy... and we're all HUMANS for crap's sake.

And if the aliens avoided ensnarement in religion over the course of their history, they'll be a couple millenia ahead of us, at the very least, already...

LOL ... the chorus of that songs is

"Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world"

Imagine if we got a transmission from deep space and our top people finally translated it and it was about bowls full of sorrow and joy and then had this defensive chorus about us not changing their world.

I know the song is really about Zen Buddhism and remaining constant through large and small upheavals in one's personal life through a greater connection to the universe ...

But on the surface it almost seems like we're saying don't screw with us. :D

I'd say the Beatles would be the best representatives of humankind to send.... though maybe not that song.

Either way...I hope we get attacked/destroyed by aliens.

Yeah I don't think that keeping it on the DL is very possible. We've been beaming all of our radio, tv, and cell phone signals out at the speed of light since the first radio transmission ever.

And as for the song: "Hello Goodbye"--The Beatles.
