14-45mm vs 14-42mm ii

I was wondering if anyone has been able to test out the new 14-42mm ii lens that was recently released by panasonic. I just grabbed a GH3 and need a cheap zoom to cover a wide range of focal points until I can throw the money at primes. I was leaning towards the 14-45mm until someone mentioned the release of an updated 14-42. I haven't been able to find out too much information about the new lens and was wondering if anyone else had any better luck or personal experience. Thanks.

I have a new G6 and the new 14-42 arriving tomorrow hopefully. I haven't seen much about that lens either and was planning on selling a bunch of my canon stuff and purchasing a 12-35 f/2.8 if the camera works out as well as the samples have shown so far. I'll let you know how it goes.

I am thinking about getting this same setup, let us know when you get some test shots up!

I'm not sure if you're referring to the 14-42 x with power zoom, but if you are, I really love the lens. I love the power zoom, the focusing with the lever, while takes a lot of getting use to, actually works pretty well. Besides being slow, for $300, really like the lens a lot.

So this is the one you have? How does that power zoom work?

Anyone know the differences between the above lens and this one? Besides being smaller?

My G6 showed up today from Samy's right on schedule !!!

So far I'm super impressed. The thing is tiny and unbelievably light with the new 14-42 II lens (this is a new lens compared to either of those links above).

Here's what the new 14-42 II looks like with it's sun shade.

I'm still sorting out all the controls. Very different from the Canon's I'm used to. The noise at iso 1600 is quite nice in the shadows and it seems they have some great routines for low light noise reduction. The auto focus is also surprisingly good. I've only been able to notice it hunt a couple times.

I'll try to upload some clips later this evening. Like I said I'm quite surprised with the image quality of this new little lens. Especially the near flawless autofocus!

Cheers,
Pete

It's one I'm developing. Pretty radical departure from the traditional Merlin or glidecam type designs. You can see it in the pics I posted earlier.

Cant tell how it works from the pics but footage looks nice. let me know if you start selling it or do a video on it!

By any chance did you bring your stabilizer to the NAB show this year? I just watched your video using a gopro and I swear that I saw you showing to someone at a booth I happened to be visiting. Looks impressive in the video!!

I had the new 14-42mm II for a couple of days on a G6. While the lens seemed nice, I could quite get my head around the G6 and perhaps had a defective body. That being said, I think the 14-45mm still outshines the short zoom lenses that have come out since, with the exception perhaps of the 12-35 and new developments in OIS. There is something about the character of the lens that just works for me, both for video and stills.

So to me the 14-45 is a classic that I'm happy to use where appropriate.
