Gee. all of a sudden - 128GB XQD G series starts to cost $350 to $900 ?
What's the catch on XQD G vs XQD M? Make me think, O7Q and 1TB SSD
is cheaper to use!!

Looks like the 128GB XQD G series card has been discontinued and will be replaced starting in July with a new model. They are currently showing it being priced at the same $170 that the 128 G Card was (prior to being discontinued).

Here is the B&H Page: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1261721-REG/sony_qdg128e_j_128gb_xqd_g_e_memory_card.html

Regarding the O7Q and SSD Solution: if you need a lot of media, then it's probably a cheaper way to go. However, I find that two 128GB cards will get me through most of my shoot days, and you can't beat XAVC-I compression for quality vs filesize.

It depends on what kind of shooting you do. I pretty much exclusively shoot in 4k XAVC-I. When I shoot, everything is carefully storyboarded and planned out. A 10 hour shoot day will push two 128GB cards, but rarely exceed it. If you are shooting freeform interviews or hours of presentations, this could become an issue.

Also, B&H is now showing stock in the 128GB XQD card at the $170 price. You can find it in the link I posted above.

I note that there are small changes to the G series cards..

First, they no longer come with a reader for $169.

Second, they sport slightly faster speeds... 440 read, 400 write, as opposed to 400 read, 350 write.

Just got two more in from B&H today.

Also, you need to buy the new reader as I believe the old readers won't work though the new reader will work for all XQD. Just another gotcha.

Actually, my old reader will read the Sony G series cards, just not as fast.. they top out about 100MB/s, whereas the included reader with my prior set of G cards will offload files at 134MB/s.

The old reader will read Lexar media, but the new reader will not.

Thanks for that info. I was told the opposite by the Sony Rep.
So does the old reader read the new cards as fast as it read the previous G cards? That would be OK with me. Were the old cards reading at 100MBs?

G-E but not made by G.E.

The new version of the G cards are called "G-E cards". B & H initially listed them as "G-E" cards but now, for some reason, only lists them as "G" cards. But you can know that they are the G-E cards because of the 440 read speed and 400 write speed.

I'll be buying some G-E cards of course because, well, I'm a sucker who thinks he always has to have the latest greatest. Sony should send me Christmas cards. Which would be appropriate since, like Christmas cards, it seems Sony media cards are outdated within a few weeks of your receiving them in the mail. :furious3:

I haven't been convinced that there is a whole lot of advantage to the new cards yet, but I don't really know how much faster they write , or whether the read will help with high speed or anything. I doubt the latter.

IMO - the "advantage" is not they are now just a tad bit faster... but a helluva lot cheaper. I paid $799 for my 128 card that I bought with the camera back in Dec 14. And now a faster version of that card sells for $169. That's quite a drop. I remember it taking much longer for the prices of P2 media to drop when it became Panny's "standard"

It caught me off guard when I received this second set of G cards, as only a month earlier I bought presumably the same product at B&H and it came in a larger box with a reader. That part number is QD-G128A.

The cards I bought and received this week are p/n QD-G128E and come in a smaller box without a reader. Same price as the one with the reader, $169.

The new cards seem to be fine. I recorded some 4K 60P just to check out the cards and the process went as expected.

Ha, I'm just the opposite. I have a few S-cards that still work just fine and so I won't be buying any of the new cards even if they get cheaper still.

At 52, maybe I'm just going through a mid-career crisis and I'm overly worried that I might be known as that old guy who still uses S cards and hot lights.

Well, I'm 54 and I gave up hot lights more than 5 years ago so I guess I'm ahead of the curve on that one. But I can honestly say nobody I work for knows are gives a rat's ass what kind of cards I'm using. :-) Besides, "S" comes after "G" so my cards must be better if I'm ever questioned, right? That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Im barely 30 and still use hot lights.

Use what you got, and invest from needs. I rarely use lights anyway. Not that i dont want to, but theres rarely time or seldom a sufficient power supply nearby.

That's because you're still using hot lights.
I'm 100% Litepanels LED and setup/strike takes a fraction of what it used to take with hot lights. And I very rarely ever need power becuase everything is battery operated unless I'm be going to be in one spot all day. I can't imagine "rarely" using lights. It makes all the difference.

Yup!

I recently saw these babys in action, and they are now the next item on my shopping list.

Maybe ill only get one or two for those light weight jobs. Then get a Litepanels or three for more normal work. Not sure yet.
