above left you can see 128 gb p2 card,

so far there is

4 GB
8 GB
16GB
32 GB
64 GB
128 Gb

Very interesting

yep, it'll be out sometime 2009 and cost 10,000 dollars - by 2011 you'll have five of them at the bottom of your drawer.

Really ?
that's too bad, well there is always hdd recording as an alternative ...
why are they already advertising a product that comes out in five years ?

I am being glib about the ways of consumersim btw. I'm sure we'll pay whatever they want us to. That said, I hope that Panasonic, not to see P2 go the way of Betamax, opt to get prices to more managable levels asap.

it will depend on the success of the smaller ps cards. If they sell well and Panasonic recoups costs early, they may speed up the development

I just posted this answer at DVinfo.net ..but might as well get it in this discussion too...

Haha, this is funny, beacsue as I was talkgin to Jan at the booth today, someone asked the exact same question abotu card sizes and showed the picture.. "[but you have a picture]" and Jan replied "That's a roadmap", continuing with "[That picture was made by Photoshop]" and the fact that P2 cards capacity is still of course controlled by the capacity of SD cards..
And they test EVERY SD card that goes into a P2 card and they ONLY accept the ones that are 100% perfect.. any memory errors at all and they don't put it in the P2 card. - Thats one of the reasons for the price.
Soposdly they have figured out a improved quiality manufacturing process that allows them to start making the capaceties bigger reliably.. so right on track with THE BASIC FORUMLA FOR P2 CARD SIZES: THEY DOUBLE IN SIZE EACH YEAR.

so 128GB is still a few years off.

Well - I can't deny it is a great CONCEPT. However, for now it just is a concept: 4 and 8 Gb are still to pricy, but useless. I'll fit so few minutes it is really not workable - unless in some specific instances and applications. Events? Forget it...

The highest density currently available in *SD* is 4GB. (Compact Flash has an 8GB) So since there are supposedly 4 SD cards in each P2 card....we could see the 16GB P2 VERY SOON!! Maybe as soon as 1st half of 06'. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

nah.. when the newer capacity cards come out.. the price of the other ones and technology in general should have dropped enough that new cards keep coming out at the same price.. but only in bigger capacity.. just like any other memory.. i mean you can now buy a 4 GB card for the same price as a 32MB card used to cost once upon a time.. the prices on the new stuff doesnt ever really go up aside from infaltion fo rthe economy.. the old technology gets cheaper, and the new stuff comes out at the same price the old "new" stuff used to be. computers and technology in general have always been like this. if anything the "new" stuff will get relatively cheaper over time when competitors chime in and theres an oversupply of the product, or the technology becomes very common place and old news.

Yeah, I''m looking forward to the day they're so cheap I can use 'em and file 'em for back up. It might happen in my son's lifetime.

Imaloser is right, and that price is about $100. Right now the 2G SD cards are getting there (currently $130), the 1G SD cards are as low as $70. 1G were $100 right before the 4G came out like a month ago, and even though they cost like $500 it made prices dip. As soon as someone else starts manufacturing 4G cards there will be another, perhaps even bigger, dip on the prices across the board. This moves in yearly cycles right now. Thankfully, the storage part of the industry is booming like crazy. There are many articles out there written about the speed of its progress and it seems to be a very stable speed when it comes to SD cards because of the great boom in digital cameras and everything else that they are realizing can have an SD card slot. All other cards are either bigger or brand exclusive. Like said before, it seems pretty certain they will continue doubling up every year for several years to come, definitely two or three at least.

So every January we should be able to spend $100 and get:
06' 2G
07' 4G
08' 8G
09' 16G (64G P2 cards become totally cheap :cheesy:!)

Read some of the old posts... this is one of the most discussed subjects in the HVX200 part of the forum. You are 82.46% wrong (trust me, I calculated it  )

Don't hold your breath for this camera there are better things down the pike.

Please illuminate, Walter. :)

The issue I see is that by the time P2 cards are truely affordable and high enough capacity - around 2009, the HVX will be due for replacement. I think Pany are pushing P2 on this camera a generation too early. The good side of this is that if you are prepared to pay for it, you do have the option to use P2 now.

Out of interest, who is planning on using P2 with this camera, who is planning alternative capture devices and who is put off the HVX because of P2?

To answer that question

To answer that question

To be honest, if the image quality of this camera exceeds the other HD options (meaning HDV, not CineAlt SR etc) with good chroma, color etc I'll buy this camera, as well as 2 p2 cards to begin. If I want to stick to SD and shoot 50, these cards would give me roughly 30 min record time, and for what I do, that would be fine. Also, these would be reusable for a long time. Also, no deck to invest in, and no capturing. To people who have shot film, this really isn't an issue (and I really think this is the target, not event videotography)

But seriously, how can DVCPRO 50 or 100 not look better than mpeg2 compressed material??? even if they all (Panasonic, JVC, Sony, Canon on the XL3) used the same optics and CCD's....this would still be 4:2:2!!

And we all know how good the 100 is shooting progressive...I don't think panasonic will drop the ball when introducing a model thats a good deal stepped up.

We'll see soon enough!

Just asking; will you have the ability to see the difference? Will you have a TV capable. Will anyone watching what you shoot do so too? All those lines are nothing more than standard definition on a standard definition TV. In other words it doesn't make a better picture on a regular TV. SO you are going to pay an awful to to make the same relative picture that you already can with a DVX100

Remember that interframe such as MPEG 2 is generally considered to be 4 times as efficient as intraframe. So take ProHD for example - 30p runs at 19 Mbit/s compared to 50Mbit/s for DVCPRO HD at 720p60. Under some conditions, the HDV codec will outperform DVCPROHD. I still think DVCPROHD is a better format, as it does offer 4:2:2 colour and intraframe has certain advantages when shooting and is smoother in the edit.

However, what will make the Panasonic a winner or not is the actual camera "front end" if you can call it that. I would prefer a decent picture recorded onto HDV over crap recorded on DVCPROHD anyday.

The end result and the cost is all that is important. Does the difference between HDV and DVCPROHD warrant all the extra cost (which is there at present). Will potential audiences know any different anyway? It would be an interesting test...
