FS7: 120G XQD card "Not guaranteed media"

I just bought a new Sony 120GB G Series XQD Memory Card for my FS7. The 128's seem to be discontinued.
After formatting I get a "Not Guaranteed Media " warning. I've read a lot of complaints on the web about this.
What's going on?

And now that the Sony discussion group is gone, who do you complain to?

Lenny,

I just purchased two Sony 120GB G Series XQD cards and had the same message. So I contacted the dealer and they did not know about the message.

What I did was re-format them a second time and the message went away. And they have now been used and re-formatted four more times. They seem to work normal, but very disturbing to get "Not Guaranteed Media" message.

Look forward to hear if anyone else has heard from Sony, or more info from their dealer.

For the F5/F55 series camera, there is a firmware update, and they work as advertised, no errors, etc. I've been using them the last few days.

Does anyone even know someone at Sony to contact with problems like this anymore?

You also need the latest firmware for both versions of the FS7. Trust me, I had a crew from out of town call me at 8PM to rent my 128 Gb cards (and drive them over 2 hours to their location)... sorry my cards are like my toothbrush-- nobody uses them but me.

Checked again and you were right. My last check I found 1.20 as current, but I was wrong, it needs to be V1.21. Upgrading now. Thanks for making me triple check, silly mistake, but nice easy fix.

Software update seems great, but disappointed it will not read my scene files saved on a different SD card then the update card. But it did keep the files stored on the camera, so easy to re-copy onto SD card. All good.

XQD 120GB working well.

I guess the 7's must differ from the 5/55 in that regard. Usually a camera with the newer firmware can read the older files, but any files created in a camera with the newer firmware can't be read by the older.

Firmware update solved problem for me . Card works now . I haven't checked to see if it recognizes old scene files.

Yes Sony were pretty quiet about this. I found this on one of their XQD PDFs:

"Compatible with PXW-FS7/FS7 II, PXW-Z100, FDR-AX1 + Nikon DSLRs
*Note: PXW-FS7/FS7 II require device firmware update to enable compatibility with QDG120F/G240F. QD-G120F/G240F cannot be used with PXW-Z100."

It's because these new cards are based on the newer PCI Express Gen.2 developments. They also claim the following:

Superior robustness: QD-G120F(120GB) and QD-G240F(240GB)
Versus the current XQD standard, QD-G120F(120GB) and QD-G240F(240GB) that have
been added to the product series are significantly more robust:
5 times* higher drop resistance.
2.5 times* higher in bend resistance.
Significantly better twist resistance and substantially superior drop resistance*.

*Based on Sony testing. We cannot guarantee against damage to recorded data or
card in all situations and conditions.

So - I'm curious now Lenny - are you running V4.31 on the FS7I ? Or does this only affect the FS7II ? And Chris post seems to suggest there's now also a 240gb card available?

I'm now running 4.31 on an original FS7-I.
I did see a 240G card available on B&H 's website. I didn't get it both because it was more expensive and because I thought cards that big might actually just be more cumbersome to deal with downloading on a shoot.

Reading the above except from the Pdf annoys me though. it seems like a defect admission that the previous XQD cards were not robust and were subject to unexpected damage and thus their lifetimes might not be as long we would have expected them to be. After all I expect that my card was going to be useful until it stopped being able to record safety. I've never had any other cards just up and crack on their own.

I wonder how many of these cases we would know about if Sony still had their discussion group online.

^ Yes - very good point. And honestly maybe the most frustrating thing about being a Sony owner.
I've still got one 128gb 400mb card - that I bought with camera 4 years ago ($799 was the price back then- over 3x was it is now!), and then a free 32gb card (seldom used) that was free from an early promotion - plus one 128 440mb card that I purchased probably 3 yrs ago now. But I handle them with kid gloves & they've never been dropped. Please tell me the newest cards still work with the G series reader ??? (remember that oddity when cards were first introduced?)
