120fps @full frame (very likely possible with current sensor, read inside 4 details)

Wanted to post this for some time... Currently, the Red One specs are 120fps only in windowed mode. One of the other companies at NAB showed this feature, so I guess it could be added to the Red One, too. It allows 120fps in full frame mode, so it allows full 35mm shallow depth of field combined with slow motion, although at a little bit reduced image quality:

As for as I know, CMOS sensors have every pixel element directly addressable for read out. There is a bandwith limit, so for 120fps, only the inner sensor elements are read out. But as far as I see from other companies, Red could also read out every second or every fourth sensor element.

Every second element:
Code:
 +--+--+--+--+
 |X | |X | |
 +--+--+--+--+
 | |X | |X |
 +--+--+--+--+
 |X | |X | |
 +--+--+--+--+
 | |X | |X |
 +--+--+--+--+

Every fourth element:
Code:
+--+--+--+--+
 |X | |X | |
 +--+--+--+--+
 | | | | |
 +--+--+--+--+
 |X | |X | |
 +--+--+--+--+
 | | | | |
 +--+--+--+--+

The resulting picture would display something that looks like "enhanced sharpness" (even though it's not) the same way some older cmos cameras had, because there are gaps between the sensor elements. This could be reduced somehow in post. Since there are many cameras on the market that have gaps between elements, I don't expect the picture quality to be too bad, and this mode would be very useful indeed for most of us.

Cheers,

^^^given that the Mysterium uses a bayer pattern, I don't know how well that would work, or how it would even be implemented.

Besides possible bayer pattern problems as FatBird mentions, I think you would probably be better off just shooting at a lower resolution and higher frame rate and then upressing. Your resolution will be the same and you won't have to deal with holes in your image. =)

Actually, the idea is to take a bayer element group and then pass 1-3 groups and use the next one again. One "X" stands for a group of red, green and blue sensor elements.

Shaw: Your idea is the "window" approach that is already implemented and results in only 16mm depth of field, which is actually what this idea tries to improve upon.

Right, I know that =)

I'm just saying that since the resolution would be the same using either technique it would probably be best to go with upressing since you would eleminate the possibility of image artifacts (gaps etc).

yah sure you did shaw. I think Purple said the reason he/she (havent checked) is doing this is to get the 35mm dof at 120 and not 16mm dof.
