12 hour time lapse.

Hi, I am wondering how to record a 12 hr time lapse. I have an HVX200a. How can I record onto my computer hard drive with firewire instead of it going to the P2 card. I have final cut studio 3. The log and capture did not work for me and that was the only way I could think of how to capture while recording onto the computer hard drive instead of a P2 card. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

why wouldnt you want to go to a P2 card? thats WAY more foolproof than tethering to a computer...

well for one a P2 card can't record for 12 hours straight, but I have figured out how to record live into final cut pro. Thanks.

I did a 30 hr timelapse and only used about 8 gigs or so....

If you know what your settings are going to be, find a timelapse calculator to figure out how many gigs you'll use. You might not need to tether the computer.

I'm not sure if FCS can record like this. Never used it before.

I just checked 3 hours into my capture and fcp dropped frames and now that 3 hours didn't count. This is very frustrating, I have my HVX200a set to record at 2fps to save space btw. Why is fcp dropping frames? I unchecked the warning in system settings!

how many gigs do you have in p2 cards?

The timelapse I shot was at 1080i interval 2s. You should be able to do this with at least a 16, but again it depends on your settings.

good luck.

why not, calulate your gig requirements, then get a P2 card/s that will get the job done, tying up a computer with all that can, and will go wrong is asking for failure.
Power your cam thru a UPS also, so if the power hic-ups your safe.

yes it can.

well actually it would depend on the frame rate of your timelapse. but i did a timelapse of like 30 hours to P2 last year and i had no problems at all. i forget my frame rate, maybe 1 frame every 2 seconds - but i dont think it even filled one 16 gig P2 card.

what kind of mac are you using?
are you capturing to the internal drive?

capturing to the same drive you boot from isnt recommended.

if youre using an external drive, what kind is it? FCP doesnt like USB.
if youre not using AT LEAST fw800, youre probably asking for trouble.

I am filming at 2fps onto a toshiba 500GB USB portable hard drive through Final Cut Pro with a FireWire. I just just checked again and it dropped the capture again after another 5 hours. I only have one p2 card that's 16gb so either when I film at 2fps it should expand the p2 card or the camera is reading it wrong so that's why I decieded to record into the computer but it keeps dropping frames. Any suggestions?

perhaps i missed you saying you have tried using our p216gb? I see where you mentioned you have P2 card but i did not see you confirm you have tried using the p216gb card. Multiple pple have confirmed it is possible on 16gb P2 card. Firewire 800 is good. Firewire 400 is also fine.

thats impossible. you are either using USB or FIREWIRE. you cant use both simultaneously.
and if its a toshiba, id bet youre using firewire 400 as opposed to 800. and FCP doesnt play smoothly with dvcproHD over firewire400. nor does it typically like USB either.

im not sure what you mean by "expand the p2 card"?

If you are using the interval settings, the camera isn't going to read back to you how much time you have on your p2 card for this.

For example: At the beginning of my 30 hr timelapse I had 55 min or so of time showing on the camera. Clearly not enough time right? Wrong, Since I was shooting an interval, after the 30 hours it said I had 45 min left. Make sense?

16gigs should be enough. Just give it a test.

what brand/model are you using?

UPS , Uninterupted Power Supply, any model will do, Cameras don't draw that much power. it should give you constant power and not cut out if the power fluctuats or goes off for a period.
I use one in my vehicle on location shoots when editing/dumping vision, UPS is downstream of an 12V-240V Pure-cinewave Inverter from vehicle battery power..

Sorry everyone. I have figured out how to record in 2fps that will show 500+ minutes on the P2 card. I had it on the wrong recording mode. Sorry for wasting your time. lol.

It would be appreciated if you could follow up with what you did so others can benefit.

Also explain if you were using USB or FW

thanks

apparently, he has the camera connected to the Mac via f/w, and the 500gb external drive connected via USB.

but I'm curious because a 12 hour timelapse at 2fps is 48 minutes of footage. do you really intend to have your audience sit through 48 minutes of a timelapse? you wouild be better off calculating how many frames you need to record for the actual run time you want, and set the camera up on Interval record.

Yeah my bad maybe its more like 7 hours not 12. lol. I just had some sort of vision I wanted to put on the camera. I rigged the HVX200a to shoot into different frame formats. So I can film like 7+ hours for a time lapse at 2fps on the P2 card. Thats what I tried but when I did the experiment my shutter/iris were set wrong so when it went dark in the night it was all black and the street lights were blacken out then when the sun came out my screen was blown out white.
