GH4 10bit 1080p at 30p/25p to an external recorder not possible, say Atomos

Hey, he said you can record 4:2:2 8bit internally and 4:2:2 externally (to ProRes 10bit). Is that correct? I though there is no way to record broadcast ready material (4:2:2 8bit) internally?

What, that's not good. :-(

I Bought the GH4 for its ability to record 4K 10 bit 25p and now it's 50i Grrrrrr.

Talk about been cheated!!

So is the Yagh genuine 10-bit 4K 25p?

No you are mistaken!

Correct, from everything I have encountered thus far.

- internal 4K: 4.2.0 8 bit - if the guy in the video said 4.2.2, I believe he is mistaken

- external 4k: 4.2.2 10 bit - OUT from the GH4 (you could record that output into any file type you wanted to: 8k 4.4.4 UberRes) but you can NOT record the internal at the same time in this mode. And this is from the HDMI port, YAGHw not needed. The HDMI REC OUTPUT setting in the GH4 give an option of 422 8bit or 422 10 bit - that is for the HDMI OUTPUT, not internal

- I didn't watch that video since it was about the NinjaBlade which is not for recording 4k. The SHOGUN will be made to capture 4k (3840x2160, not C4K so far) and formats are listed at the bottom here http://www.atomos.com/shogun/ and include 4k 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30

Watch the video. 10bit 422 1080p over hdmi WITHOUT the yagh was one of the big headlines. Turns out you only get that if you're shooting cinema 24fps. I don't give a flying monkey about 4k, I just wanted proper 10 bit 1080p - looks like I've bought a turkey as it stands.

It is internal 4:2:2 8bit, not 4:2:0.

Also, this video shows that the camera doesn't output 25p or 30p, only some nonstandard interlaced 50i/60i, which is what this thread is about.

All we can hope for is that the new firmware that is rumored in Sept will be not only adding things but also fixing these things but like I have said in the past I really feel like if this is true about a new firmware coming out then I say it was made to make the GH4 and Shogun really work together.

I see it having LOG when using the 10 bit mode
I see it fixing this problem with HDMI
I would hope they would add something along the line of pure 96fps out of the camera so its not slowed down and we can get a stream of that
Mabye add 120fps for when recording externally

Didnt mean to turn this into a new firmware but wanted to say I think we will see this fixed, panasonic wants to lead and they have sold a ton of GH4s so far so they have already put them selfs in a good spot.

wait, really? Everything I've read stated 4:2:0 internally. Nothing I've read said 4:2:2 internally. How do we find this out? I'd prefer 422 yeah

Flip it and buy yourself something that records 'proper 10 bit 1080p' in the flying monkey flavor of your choice, this camera is backordered almost everywhere in North America, I can't imagine they are any less in demand in Scotland.

@ LyleGorch - you're a funny guy. 10bit color depth to an external recorder was one of the big headlines from panasonic - not ten bit only at 24 fps.

Well, it does also do 10bit 4:2:2 at 1080i

That said, the guy in the Atomos video did say that, while not perfect, you can use the deinterlace function in FCP. I'm on Premiere, so I don't know how well it works in FCP, but it does work reasonably well in Premiere (though I haven't tried it with footage from either an Atomos product or the GH4). Hopefully with the mythological log update, this will be fixed.

If the GH4 scans its frames progressively at 25/30 fps, then its interlaced 50/60i output will actually contain a 25/30psf video stream, interlaced with a 2/2 pulldown. After the Atomos records this as a 50/60i video, your editor should be able to reverse the pulldown and reassemble the video into a progressive 25/30p video stream. This is how in-camera 25/30p AVCHD recordings are produced by the GH2 and GH3, and I assume the GH4 works the same way as well?

@lpowell - what I understand from the atomos video was that the camera outputs a brand new 50\60i stream over HDMI when in 50\60hz modes, not a progressive image in an interlaced wrapper . Hence the requirement to deinterlace in post.
