1080p?

I just recently purchased an HVX and I ran into a problem. Under the P2 settings for recording setup there is only 1080 i /24 p. I thought the camera had a 1080 P/24P setting...was I wrong?

There are no native framerates (like you're thinking of) in 1080 resolution. The 24 frame per second rate specifically uses pulldown (2:3) and is set within the 1080 / 60i recorded order.

You're still recording progressive - the progressive frames simply reside within the interlaced order (2:3 or 2:3:3:2).

1080 was originally an interlaced format, so (like miniDV) 24p has to fit in a 60i timeline. The camera does this by applying a pulldown (as overland said) to make 24 go into 60. So, you have 1080i/24p, or 1080i/24pa. The cameras ccd's are progressive scan ccd's. Your footage is scanned progressively. Then it is either recorded as pure 24p, in 720pn mode. Or, a pulldown is applied in 720p, 1080i, DVCPRO25/50, and miniDV.

If you have a 24p aware NLE, you can shoot 24pa, as you will end up with 24 discreet frames, and one duplicate frame for every 5. Then, edit on a 24p timeline.Your NLE will strip out the one duplicate frame, leaving you with 24 pure progressive frames per second. 24p on the other hand (still progressive) would be edited on a 60i timeline (if I'm not mistaken). Which can be good if you know you are going out only for 60i broadcast, or if your NLE does not have a 24 fps timeline option.

I'm shooting in 24p on the HVX200, at least that's what it displays in mode check in the LCD window as 1080i/24p. When I bring it in to P2 Log, the frame rate says 59.94i...Does this refer to the rate that it would appear in the timeline? Just want to make sure I'm actually shooting in 24p.

Thanks - A

In short... you are shooting in 24p carried around in a 60i basket... it's 24p... it's scanned progressively... the frames are recorded progressively... and the motion is 24fps. it just uses pulldown to make the 24 fit into the 60 limitation of the codec....

Hey Jason,

You helped me before so I'm going to you again. Since my last question I've noticed that on the bottom of the P2 Log, where I import the media to in the right hand corner it says: Video Format: DVCPRO HD 1080i60, 29.97 FPS. Now that's making me Where does that 29.97 fps fit into the picture nervous. Am I shooting in 24p or what?

I've done a test clip in 24P in f6 and 24pa on F5 and F6 and get the same results when I import into P2 Log (DVCPRO HD 1080i60, 29.97 FPS). All I know is that I got to deliver in 1080i/24fps and uncompressed.

Please help---in the thick of it. Thanks

If you shoot 1080i/24p(a) with the HVX200, you're shooting in 24p thats complient with the 60i standard..just put it back into the computer and it will be 24p if your NLE removes the frames and you edit in a 24p timeline.

The reason the P2 Log is saying 60i is because it detects those extra frames...I would assume thats the reason why.

You're still shooing 24p.

1080 24p is really 29.97 - shoot a test and drop it into
a 1080 60i sequence. you will see 2 interlaced pulldown
frames and 3 progressive frames. This is so you can get
the 24p look and still edit in a 29.97 timeline.
If you want true 24p - then shoot 1080 24pA
and when you import the footage make sure you
click "Remove Advanced Pulldown". That is found
under preferences in the P2 import window.
If you are not sure what you want then shoot 1080 30p,
this will work in a 1080 60i sequence and
you can always conform a 1080 30p clip to 24p.
I have had no luck in removing the pulldown from clips
shot 24p/60i.

1080i/24P and 1080i/24PA = 24P?

YES!!! (just to be clear if you were looking for that kind of statement for peace of mind)

And as long as you render a 24p uncompressed copy then you are golden... don't worry about a thing...
Also, shoot 24PA cause it should be lighter on your CPU and it should be easier to edit.
