Stephen/Nate - What monitor do you use?

I am contimplating buying a consumer 50" plasma HD screen to monitor/check focus and edit footage shot w/ a JVC100 ($2600 new)...

What do you experienced JVC 100 users use ?

I ask this because the view finder has complained about in other posts/forums.

Is this overkil? Underkill? It's a 720p monitor, so I figure that the footage would look very good on it when shown to prospective clients/investors....

Thanks for any advice,

John

Hi,

The focus assist works great. Maybe try the focus assist out first? It might save you some bread.

all the best...

I find that even with focus assist, I still shoot more soft footage than I'd like to admit. Focus assist, especially in wider shots, still will show edges even when they're soft. Then there's the issue of the backfocus that goes out every time the camera travels in my car, almost.

Having an HD monitor, I feel, is imperative to learning how to shoot proper HD. After all, how are you going to know if you're ever buzzing focus? Or exposing properly? SD downconversions and low-res "HD" consumer sets just cover things up (note I don't mean to infer that all consumer HD sets are low-res. Just some).

I myself have a 14" Sony PHM-14M8U. It's a slightly older 1080 monitor, but has a lot of the features of the broadcast line. It doesn't show ALL of the res of the HD100, but it's very very close.
