1080P MJPEG VS 1080P AVCHD Stills**

Can someone confirm that the 60, 62, 70 settings actually result in a higher bitrate while shooting compared to 50,52,60 ?
The E settings were 60,66,70 and there was a note that it resulted in a lower bitrate than 50,52,60.
Strange!

That looks really phenomenal! Lets just hope for the 24/25p breakthrough everybody is praying for.

720p or 1080p

720p or 1080p

So just wondering what the general pros and cons are between

1440x1080p and 720p(70mb+)

Cheers

Go with 60,62,70

There are no spikes in the stream unlike some of the other previous settings, so unlike the other which may-may not have higher bit rates, these are as stable as I have found, you can throw the camera around, zoom in-out, 720p etc etc.

Note: have not tested yet as 25p, only 50i. and work with class 6, peak or better, am using my sandisk 30mb ex3 for all tests now but noted the class 6 works too.

MJPEG Native 2x anamorphic vs old AVC

MJPEG Native 2x anamorphic vs old AVC

Finally got a chance to play with the ptool. The first thing I (unscientifically) tested was the MJPEG native anamorphic trick with a 2x LOMO anamorphic lens and PappasArts' settings.

I made my MJPEG frame 2560x720(3.56:1 aspect, which is 2x 1.78:1) this mode stretches the image by 2x but when you shoot with a 2x anamorphic lens, it cancels the effect out and you get a non squeezed 3.56:1 clip.. this can then be easily cropped in post to a 1920x720 2.67:1 aspect ratio..

I compared it to a clip i shot using the unmodified AVC mode and my usual scope post (cropping and squishing to 1440x540)...

Like Pappas said, the bigger MJPEG frame-sizes are not as sharp as the AVC modes.. still a cool trick though!

GH13 native 2x anamorphic @ ~80mbits

Can't wait to play some more. Also, I was using a Class 6 Panasonic SD card, it worked totally fine expect once when I upped the ISO to 800 this caused it to stop after 3 sec.

Have you also modified the GOP in the 60,62,70 settings. And are you also using the native 24P/25P ? I am asking because all these things somehow affect the performance.

Totally cool. Love that anamorphic look...

I slapped on the anamorphic adapter earlier to see how the extra detail with the new AVCHD would look. Considering how these adapters lower detail, it's not to bad.
the 4th pic is non anamorphic..

I'd bet it is because they actually are just... 720p upsampled in-camera to 1080p or am I wrong?

It would be nice to see a comparison with the AVCHD patch instead.

Gunther has posted this test here:

Yeah, it's doing some sort of strange upsampling for sure. But I left my height at 720 for my test, so I was hoping that I'd end up with something a little sharper then what I got. Oh well. And, I have some hacked/original AVC whip-pan grabs in a thread in the GH13 Footy section now (link below).

Pappas, those anamorphic grabs look SHARP! I tested my scope lenses last night with the hacked AVC, that info is here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?p=2023098#post2023098

Thanks again for your hard work!!

Have you considered that the softness in MJPEG 1080p may be due to the camera NOT applying the characteristic Panny sharpening in MJPEG 1080p.
MJPEG was never meant to be 1080p so its possible that the debayer algorithm has a sharpen filter that does not kick in for MJPEG 1080p.

It seems to be an equally valid explanation - and unless someone compares a res chart between AVCHd and MJPEG, its definitely possible.
Just strange that there would be an upsample for 1 codec and not for another.
