1080P, Barry a little help please...

When testing the camera over at EVS the day before yesterday, we were unable to get 1080p to come up as an option in the recording mode setting menu. Barry, you mentioned in another thread that you'd shot about 2 hours of 1080p on one of the prototype units. I'm wondering if there is anything we are doing wrong to set the camera to 1080p. I could get it into 1080i no problem, but P was not and option. We also couldn't find reference to 1080p in the manual. I'm going back to do more testing today and will be more carefull about documenting what I find out. This is on a December 29th "Production Release" camera. Rush, correct me if I'm misstating this.

Thanks,

Filmstox - The HVX lists 1080P as "1080i/30P" "1080i/24P" and "1080i/24PA" because of the fact that there is no provision for Progressive recording in the 1080 variant of DVCProHD. So, just like on the DVX, the progressive frames have a pulldown added and are recorded in an interlaced stream. If you look at the "Recording Setup" menu on the HVX you'll see the second, third, and fourth options in the list are PROGRESSIVE formats carried in an INTERLACED 1080 stream:

It would be disingenuous for Panasonic to list it as 1080P (because it is not recording a 1080P stream, it is recording a 1080i stream with pulldown) - but they correctly list the frame rates as Progressive to make it clear.

Just to be clear - the HVX absolutely, no question, 100% CAN record 1080/24P and 1080/30P.
I checked it out myself earlier this week.

I hope this helps.

Luis,
Thanks for the info, it makes sense. I guess we should have looked a bit more carefully!

It seems to me that they should just call it 1080p if that's what it's doing. Seems confusing & misleading to me. They own DVCPROHD so they can make whatever provisions they want for their own personal format. HDCAM has 1080p, so why not DVCPROHD?
The should dump the 'i' all together. Makes it seem like it's interlaced or doing sometihng we all know it's not.

Are you being ironic, Shannon?... It is the XL H1 the one that does starnge things to get progressive

1080P is done OVER 60i in the camcorder, some other brands left you to do it by yourself in post, but Panasonic with it's huge broadcast knowledge and experience did that option to make HVX more attractive and faster for the broadcast. Here below is a table of the HVX recording options (everything is done over 60i and in PAL variants is over 50i). Have a look

What the hell kinda comment is that? Don't be weird bro! Is EVERYBODY fanatical here? Who said anyting about the XL-H1?? why is it even being discussed right now????

All I said was I wish they put 1080p instead of 1080i in the menu since its a true 1080p scan and record camera....WTF???

SJ, 480P is done over 60i as well, but they say 480P in the menu don't they? I'm not sure. If they do say 480p, then I just wish they said 1080p as well. To avoid any confusion to those who may not know the specifics and stuff.

Because you said:

and the Canon labeled theirs as "24F," which is even more confusing and misleading. Rodrigo's post makes perfect sense to me...

SO WHAT that I said that??? It does seem to me that they should have called it 1080p. AND??? Your point is???

Moreover, We ain't talkin about the XL-H1 are we?? Go and start a post about the XL-H1 and why they called it 24f, and I'll comment about what I wish Canon should have done instead.
HOWEVER
Since we are talking about the HVX200 in the HVX-200 forum, then "THATS" what I am commenting on. *lightbulb*

Dayum, what are you guys, Guarddogs or something for Panasonic? Say one small remark about their camcorder and what you 'wish' they would have done to make things better and you jump defensive and sh**t. LOL

a little advice: DON'T DO THAT.

It makes you look silly and obsessive. Like a hooker & pimp relationship.

it's just a video camera guys. I'm just making a comment on someting I wish they did guys. You can't MARRY your camera guys. PLEASE FOR GOD'S SAKE, Don't stick your pee-pee in the P2 slot!

Panasonic don't love you....they only want your money, just like Canon & Sony & JVC and the rest of them.

My god!

Wow, calm down my friend. :)

I think if you take a look back at my last month of posts, you'll see I'm nowhere near a "guarddog for Panasonic." In fact, I've been pretty critical of the HVX, as it has quite a legacy to live up to (the DVX before it) and so far, it hasn't met my expectations. You asked a question and I simply answered it for you. I don't think that deserves the name calling.

Ok, I'm sorry Haakon.

it just seemed like all I said was "I SURE WISH THEY SAID 1080P INSTEAD OF 1080i TO AVOID CONFUSING A FEW FOLK"

and the only response I got was someone asking If I was being ironical. And then you supporting him.

how about "YES SHANNON, YOU'RE RIGHT, I WISH THEY SAID 1080P RATHER THEN 1080i AS WELL, HAVE A NICE DAY"

sorry Haakon.

Haha... so as long as we always agree with you, everything's cool? Got it.

I wasn't so much agreeing with his statement as I was explaining the basis for why he said it, which seemed to be your original question. I agree with you that if it's true progressive, it should be labeled that way (they didn't put "60i/24p" on the DVX, so why do it now?) but they made a choice and it's just a menu item... nothing to get all worked up about. My guess is it's listed that way because of all of the variable framerates the camera offers and it helps distinguish what timebase you're using more clearly.

Perhaps not posting in all CAPS would help your cause, as it comes across as a little assertive. Anyway, I'm not taking anyone's side here; I was merely providing information.

I used caps to seperate the text and emphasize 'talking'....go back and see I didnt use caps.....*sigh* oh never mind

its a lose lose situation here.

They actually call it "480i/24P" in the menus, so it's consistent. Annoying, but consistent.

Gotcha Barry.

That just creates uneccessary explaining to those that don't know any better.
