1080i/24p Kona SD Final Cut 5 confusion

Got a question for all you experts out there. I am possibly going to shoot something in 1080i at 24p, I would rather shoot 720p, but the client has this "1080" buzz word floating in their head. The spot will end up on digibeta.
Here is my question:
Can I shoot 1080i/24p, import the P2 files into final cut and do a pull down. Down-rez the footage to SD, edit in 23.98, and then go out to 29.97 for the Beta. Can this down-rez be done on a KONA SD card. I hope this is enough information for some of you to help me... this whole jump to HD is frightening, but kinda fun.

Yes, but you will need FCP 5.1 to handle the 1080p/24. Actually what you could do is shoot 1080 24p/60, and edit in a 29.97 timeline, then just output the final in SD. No need to go from 29.97 to 24, then back again. Shooting in 1080 24p/60 gets the 24p look, without being in true 24p. Then you have the best of both worlds. A beautiful picture, plus the 1080 that the customer covets.

I use a decklink card, and would output the SD using compressor, so I'm not exactly sure of the Kona capabilities.

I am even more confused. I thought the HVX200 could only shoot 1080i, not 1080p. So if I shot 1080i/24p, it would be like shooting with a DVX at 24p. You shoot progressive, but it goes to the tape interlaced. What in the world does 1080 24p/60 mean? :crybaby: So confused. Thanks for your help, I certainly need it.

yup...thats right. this well all documented here on the site.
 
the HVX does indeed shoot 1080p, but it does it like the DVX, which is called 1080p 24/60, which means 24p over 60. 24 frames are embedded into a 29.97 videostream, which you extract ala the DVX, but that requires FCP 5.1 if you intend to edit/playback from a 24p timeline. You use FCP to get the 24 frames out, like you used to do with cinema tools with the DVX. Or, you can just leave it as is, and edit in a 29.97 timeline, like you would if you were using the DVX in 24p mode, not 24pA. That retains the look of the 24p, but it works in a 29.97 timeline. Since thats your ultimate final resting spot, and not a 24p DVD, you are better off doing that.

Select 1080i/24 in the frame rate menu, and away you go. Select a 1080i 29.97 preset in FCP. Hope you have lots of p2 cards.
