1. Can I keep my unhacked GH1 rate at 29.970 and not convert to 24p by removing pulldown but not converting.

Using these files on a 29.970 NTSC timeline to mix the 60p files for a 30p project in Sony Vegas.

2. With my hacked GH1 can I stick those on the 29.970 timeline and it will convert them up from 23.971 to 29.970. I have to shooot a little more footage so am thinking to go back to unhacked to keep it at 29.970

3. then Vegas should deinterlace files that need it ((1080 29.970 files) and leave progressive files (720 60p) alone during render?

I've searched through the forums and everybody wants 24p, so there is no info on this.

Yea I had the same question as you and I could not find any good information on it. Therefore, I did a little experimenting myself.

Going from 30p to 24p is an absolute no-no as this video shows. You will get extremely jerking motion.

Now I think going from 24p to 30p is possible but not ideal. You really need to start with a progressive 24p source instead of the 24p wrapped in 1080i that a GH1 does. Then just try rendering it 30 FPS or 60 FPS. At 60 FPS it should look like 24 FPS except for every once in awhile you will get 1 frame that displays for 3/60th of a second instead of just 2/60th of a second. 1/60th of a second is not that long so you might not even notice it if the subject is relatively static.

Give it a try and see if it works for you. I can post a Nikon D7000 24 FPS sample converted to 30 FPS later if that would help you.

thanks. i am a ameteur here just wading in the dark. i wish i had a technical advisor. i am testing now in vegas just using the native files and not deinterlacing. its fine with no motion but if there is a ton of motion you get ghosting. that is why i think i can remove pulldown first, but not conform to 24p (but waiting for cineform to upgrade me since I can't reinstall) keep the 29.970 files and mix them with all my other footage which is all around 30p. maybe we can help each other out.

Removing pulldown will convert 24PsF footage (24P in 60i wrapper) into 24p footage. If you want to edit on a 30p timeline you should deinterlace the 24PsF footage. The downsides of this approach are, like you noticed, some artifacts that are introduced by adding 3:2 pulldown to original 24p sourced from the sensor.

The alternative is to edit on a 24p timeline, which some prefer to do, because conforming 60p to 24p produces no artifacts as above. However, footage will not look as good as if material was shot in 24p natively because 60 does not evenly divide by 24.

My suggestion is to try each approach and see what produces the best results. There is no "right" way to achieve what you are looking for, as each approach involves its compromises.

If you want to get 24PsF out of your GH13 do not enable the "native 24/25p patch". You can still use all the other benefits of the hack, such as high bitrates. Basically, you are looking at applying lpowell's AVCHD patch (see the GH1 hack subforum).

Yes, not having access to Vegas I believe the default action to conform 24PsF footage to 30p timeline is to deinterlace. 720/60p will also be conformed by dropping every other frame.

Actually I think there is one solution that is better than the others. You should inverse telecine the 1080i footage into true 1080p @ 24 FPS. That is a lossless process. Do not do a simple deinterlace on the original video. Then just encode the file to 1080p @ 59.94 FPS preferably or 1080p @ 29.97 FPS will work also. You can get some frames that display for 3/60th of a second instead of 2/60th of a second but you really can’t notice 1/60th of a second unless the subject is moving extremely fast.

I will upload the test video of this later to show that it works quite well.
