100a squeeze question

hi, i'm planning on buying a dvx 100a or maybe a new 100b, i've read quite a bit on hear about the differences and the general feeling i get is that the 100a is still pretty good. My main concern is about the distorted image you get when you shoot sqeeze on the 100a, as i hear its not displayed in the correct ratio and is distorted in the viewfinder, could any of you folk who are familiar with the 100a comment on how problematic framing and shooting this way is? cheers

squeeze is the same for both cameras. yes it is "squashed" in the viewfinder and lcd if the lcd display is set to 4:3. it doesnt bother me. If u have ur lcd display set to 16:9 in squeeze mode it will show normal (unsqashed image) however its the overscaned image as it wud appear on tv. This maybe problematic if shooting for the net as computer lcd's dont suffer from overscan. So if u have a boom mic or whatever thats just out of the frame, it may show up in the shot if ur shooting for the net. You can set ur lcd to 4:3 mode and shoot in squeeze and it will show the entire frame.

When ur playing back directly from the camera on a 4:3 tv squeezeit will display letterboxed. On a 16:9 tv it will fill the screen.

This is only an option on the DVX100b. With the 100a, you can only view the anamorphic squeeze. I shoot with squeeze on a 100a and it really isn't that big of an issue. It's a little weird at first, but an hour or so of shooting and you figure it out.

yeah - it's really no dramas. The image does look a little wierd at first (on 100a), but you don't notice it after you've been shooting for a while. You learn little things like headroom can be less than you think - sitting the top of frame right on top of a subject's head gives you nice "correct" head room in the 16:9 shot for instance. But yeah - its no biggie and you shouldn't let it affect your buying decision alone.

thanks for replys...so can you flick back and forth to 4.3 if ya wana check something like exposure etc?

You'll still be able to see exposure no matter what mode you're in, including zebras.

I'd stick with the odd looking squashed frame...I just got off a feature with a run time of 81 minutes that we did on the DVX and I stuck with the squashed thing. It's really not a problem in any way, after a couple of minutes of shooting you get used to it.

Framing, exposure, the look of the film, keeping things out of shot....everything is perfectly fine with the squashed/stretched look on the LCD.
