very intersting subject! i have an arcade at home, a mame machine i buillt out of spare parts and some wood! tell me when iyou are done with it, i'll definately watch it :)
one questuon to the making:
how did you record the audio?

Thanks for the comments, I expect a Summer 2011 release. Assuming I can get the funds to go back and complete principal photography.

as far as the audio, I used a zoom H4N with wired lav. The recording conditions were not ideal, but take from it what you will.

I like what I've seen so far. You might stabilize some of the interview shots, but that's probably the only criticism I could come up with since you already stated you hadn't done any color correction yet.

heh, thanks Amr I'll try to avoid it. But you know what I mean... straight from the camera. Thanks for watching.

DigitalBard: any reccomendations on stabilization software? I'm sure i've seen an option in after effects for it but have yet to play with it. I've heard it causes jello-y artifacts, no?
Certainly something to look into.

and yes, colour correction is necessary.

Moojangles... that video was amazing.

Nicely shot and edited. If that was shown on the Discovery channel I wouldn't have noticed anything different,

All that done on the little t2i.

I look forward to seeing more.

I liked it! Are you going to talk about StarCraft II at all? I don't know if it's popular in Japan, I know it's huge in Korea (as well as gaming in general).

Great video on a great subject. I love arcades but here in the UK they're all gone. Fond memories of 1991 and Street Fighter II or 1989 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Them were the days. :)

thanks for the comments. StarCraft II is a game I know I'm enjoying a lot right now but it doesn't fit into the whole arcade scene as much, though that would definitely be a different story in Korea. When I was there I turned on the TV and enjoyed channel 13 which is 24 hour starcraft coverage.... insane.

I'm covering a big gaming tournament here in Canada in November as a contrast to the Japanese scene, I am hoping to get back to Japan in the spring to cover EVO 2011.

The t2i has performed quite admirably so far, Im considering moving up to a 7D though for those 1/3rd ISO stops and dial in kelvin temps.

Update: Promo video for Canada Cup event is done. (see first post)

I'll be in Calgary to shoot the event this November 13th and 14th.

Come check it out if you're in town.

looks great, would love to see the final documentary. like the editing, the images and the grafics too.
and of course the subject, the hyper-colorful blinking japanese arcade world is kind of surreal, love it. hope you get the funding.

Very cool video. I would love to see the finished product. My dad used to take me to the arcade every weekend for years when I was a kid so they were a very big part of my childhood. I could on go for days talking about all the games I used to love. Great piece.

Project is now up and running on IndieGoGo. If you like it, and want a copy of the DVD please donate! Or just pass it along. I'm really excited to get this project off the ground.
