Re: 10 minute short (Shot on a DVX of course)

hey double it I downloaded and began to watch but it's just too busy round here to concentrate. I did see what looked like NYPD camera style that looked cool. I was sort of thrown by some of the close pans where it appears to overshoot the mark the slide back. Kinda like watching a drunk person try to follow the conversation. From what I was able to see it looked cool. I'll definately watch when it quiets round here. Was it influenced by the NYPD look?

Re: 10 minute short (Shot on a DVX of course)

I gotta say.. I didn't understand a thing in the entire movie... and it is not cause I missed the point... allow me to explain.

things I liked:

some of the camera work was pretty freakin awesome, especially all the steady camera work in the club.
Timing was also quite good.

things, or only thing I didn't like:

the sound... you really really need a good shotgun mic... I honestly couldn't understand what anyone was saying.. and it sometimes sounded as if the sound went out of sync sometimes..

I didn't hate or like it.. I really couldn't follow.. only cause of the sound.. it looked interesting.. and I wanted to know what was going on...

don't take this the wrong way, I am merely judging on technical aspects not on creative... but the technical made it impossible for me to get into the movie. great choice of music though.

anywho, I hope I didn't make you cry yourself to sleep with my harsh comments..heh..

cheers.

hehe, nope not crying myself to sleep over that one =) . We had a lot of sound issues because we shot on location in a major club. There were some things we just could not work around so we had to do a lot of sound in post. We got it pretty close on a 4 speaker setup, but this online edit is really bad. I actually didnt realize how bad it was.... I have watched this movie ten million times so I didnt watch the entire thing after encoding it. I am going to try and make an online edit though so you all can actually hear the audio!! But Keep the comments coming... its exactly what I want and need. I know this isnt the best film in the world, but I do know its the best I have made so far and I can learn a lot from it. So rip it apart!

Re: 10 minute short (Shot on a DVX of course)

I really liked some of the shots, but it was a little too shakey for my taste. I don't know if that was intentional. Also, I agree with the sound comment. It is just waaaaayyy too low. Good job though and keep it up. Tim.

Re: 10 minute short (Shot on a DVX of course)

well i was gonna bash the audio, but that's taken care of.
That scene with the cop reminds me of Deniro and Paccino in HEAT.
I'm in love with the camera work...glad that he died in the end, though I don't know why. Also, I LOVED the music cues. I swore it was Talib. But I guess I'm wrong.
But it doesn't work for me. But it's good for you. You did some great things and had some great moments...this could have easily been fleshed out into a movie like The 25th Hour, you know? But it was a little flat...but it's cool. The strong parts were strong...the visuals, the kinetic camera, the lighting...good job shocking us with diff temperatures (club vs. bathroom). REALLY nice car scene. Nice focus pulling. Lot's of good stuff, but I didn't buy the time mechanism, but only because I may have missed some dramatic points due to the audio. I think better writing and better sound would do you well, but otherwise, it was great...and maybe more rehearsals with the actors. Your main guy was off and on...the cop was flat, but the sushi mechanism was really great. In fact, I'll bet you if I watch the movie with the sound off, it'll be amazing...

all my own opinion. Once again, I know it was a large undertaking, and as a class project in an upper level course, definitely good stuff. Where are you located?

Re: 10 minute short (Shot on a DVX of course)

yep...i'm watching it with no audio now and it's a whole diff movie..although now it's asking for more visual cues...like you could do a new funky thing with each new character (at least with the talk with the girl) just a new kind of jostle. You've got everything in place...just tighten the screws next time, and spend as much time on everything as you can. But that's all. good stuff, bro.

Thanks for the words... this is exactly what I need... My film classes SUCk at criticism... the teacher doesnt want to hurt anyones feelings or something. I want my movies to be torn apart so i can get better.

The rapper in the film is incwell, check him out at www.incwell21.com . We got the rights for that to be in this movie which was great ( he is a friend of the creative consultant)

Our next film we'll nail the script more... we started off with the idea of filming the ending of the writers feature length movie and that really shows in this

Re: 10 minute short (Shot on a DVX of course)

Yeah! That's what this feels like---a dramatic ending. I wanted to see more of the characters...where the freak did the ring come from...that sorta thing. Felt like the beginning of Memento kinda lol. Keep doing great work! I can't wait to see more.

Re: 10 minute short (Shot on a DVX of course)

awight coo! How should I do this lets see:

techincal stuff: Audio:

audio levels were all over the place. Your sound mix should has some sort of consistency to it. It sounded like you guys ADR, if you did you its off. I'm sure you notice it. It's okay though ADR can be difficult to get right sometimes especially when your new to it I hope. The sound stuff, with practice you will get it. The music was good, I had no problem with it. Other than that, practice and use good headphones when monitoring your audio on set. make sure you get good high levels with out peeking. The chick was cute by the way.

Camera:

The shakey thing did somewhat botherd me. It rarely works for me in my case. I'm not a big fan of the blair witch style. I'm like my grandma, I get headaces. For Saving Ryan Private parts worked. But if thats the look and movent you want then more power too you. Only problem with that is people who can't really tolarate the shakeyness won't watch it. Don't you want grandma to watch it too? Some of your shots looked out of focus or I'll just balme it on the compression. Light up the shots alittle more. It looked really grainy in some scenes. The DVX needs lots of light when its in 24p mode. The framing was okay. The chick was cute by the way, yeah I said it twice!

Overall, it wasn't bad nor was it spectacular. Its a good start and I'm sure with practice you'll become a bad ass one day and I'll be asking you for an autograph. Sign one out to my grandma,. keep it up playa! Hope any of this helps. PEACE!!

Yeah a lot of the dialouge was re-recorded and you can tell. The levels are all messed up, but its not nearly as bad on the DVD. IM trying to fix it for the internet.

I am still learning a lot about lighting and sound. It was grainy in some places, and thats mostly due to my inexperience lighting (We had 2 totas and 2 omnis).

The shaky camera was completly consious. Thats the look i wanted the film to have. I know that some people just dont like that, but i wanted to use it as it worekd well with the film. I really am not worried about grandma (sorry) in this sort of film. Im not expecting her to watch it, nor am i gearing it toward her.

A few shots did have a softish focus. I can BS and say i wanted it that way, but really it was me trying to do too much at once, since all the shots were on a glidecam or dolly. I hate infiinte exposure rings, i just cant get used to them.

Thanks a lot for your sugestions. There is nothing i love more in the world than making movies, so I too hope you'll see my name up there on the big screen some time in the not too distant future.

Re: 10 minute short (Shot on a DVX of course)

I was joking about the grandma thing. One thing I forgot to comment was that 10mins was alittle too long. this could of been condensed and you would of still gotten your message across. Keep it up!

Re: 10 minute short (Shot on a DVX of course)

Hey Double it. Got time and space to watch. I'm still seeing a sort of NYPD/Law and Order camera style. I thought all the way through that it had potential to be reaaly good. The hand hel cu work didn't work for me And the color work threw me off. The whole film was dark but that could be my setup. Audio... I had no clue what was being said for 90 % of the film. I did see some style potential it just seemed to lack technical expertise. Overall it was good enough to watch all the way through but I was real busy wondering when 10 minutes was gonna be up. Music choices for me were its strength.
With a lot more attention paid too all the above, I think you could re mix the sound, re-work the color and brightness and you could put up a better product. Keep it up cos I think you've got what it takes ;)
