Re: 10 minute short (Shot on a DVX of course)

well I'm still a fan of the ECU's...i think it was a little disconcerting here because you also had that funky thing going with the mattes, or the letterbox or whatever...it's like a tease of widescreen/fullscreen that makes the shots feel a little claustrophobic but then it's probably better with the right cropping.

Letterbox thing?

Dude, I gotta agree with everybody else. The "caffeine framing" doesn't really work for me.

Slow that camera down, keep your subject in the sights and let off the close ups a little.

Audio and framing issues aside, I did keep my interest for the whole ten minutes. and I really like the glidecam shot when he first gets in the club. The story was fine for me, I don't really think you should speed it up.

It might be the compression, but the colors are a little too crazy for my tastes, you might have lost some detail in there somewhere.

and yeah, the chick was cute.

aw man, I still gotta disagree...I think close-ups are sorely lacking from the DV aesthetic...most dv stuff is shot for viewing on a tv or computer, and it's that detail that we wanna see...sure, it'd suck to see ten foot pupils on a big screen, but it's intense to see them on my 17 inch.
And it depends what he was going for, but the grain and the darkness worked for me.

Re: 10 minute short (Shot on a DVX of course)

just checked it out, here are my thoughts

overall - this short was more or less complete - i agree with some of the above comments that it could be compressed a lot. the dialouge really felt soft - like they were just read and not emoted (is that a word)

The time thing didnt work for me because it honestly felt like a lot more time had passed in between each moment that you flashed the time. I think film works like htat though - you generally immerse your audience into the movie and they forget the concept of time. I would remove the time indicators unless it had some dramatic relevance

even though the audio was ok - I coudnt really figure out what the point of the film was - but perhaps that was your intention - a loosely based short film.

I think it was great that you got to shoot inside a club with all the nice ladies and stuff hehe

good job overall keep it up - just tighten up the film a bit and maybe redub some of teh audio dialogue

Yeah, that close the shake would have been a lot worse if i was holding it. Also I just like using the glidecam and it makes the shoot look a little more pro :)

Your on the right track, but a few things bothered me. First, the looping was really weak and spotty. Everything seemed really low and dim, kinda depressing. The colors were all over the place, did you white balance your DVX? Other than that it was a good story, the opening title sequence was pretty good. So, keep at it. :)
