10 bit, ProRes video straight from camera.

Hey!

So, I'm not sure if any of you have heard about this, but Atmos is coming out with a field recorder called the Ninja

http://www.atomos.com/Ninja/

Essentially, it takes your video from the HDMI port, working much like a monitor, until you hit record on the recorder. It then records 10 bit, instead of 8 bit, video straight to a hard drive!

Does anyone have any info? anyone pre-ordering?

I didn't see this on the website - but where does it say it can ignore the red dot that stays on the HDMI-out screen? Wasn't that a hangup for using external recorders with the Canon DSLRs?

also, i don't know if anyone else uses an external monitor but those HDMI ports are NOT well made. There is no way I would trust it as a capture source. so scary.

Isn´t the red dot not only there when you hit "record" on the camera?

Postmaster: Yes. but otherwise you have the white box (Or does that go away on the monitor?) essentially, this recorder records what is coming into it, whether or not the camera is recording.

Also, if wose comes to worse, and can A) shoot for a different aspect ratio
B) Shoot and frame so that you can zoom in later.

You would need to shoot to the card as well then in post over lay those few pixels covered by the dot with the frames from the card.

that doesnt seem like a very easy workflow; more like a pain. even if it was automated, i wouldnt do that. perhaps a hack can be made to eliminate the dumb white boxes when focusing and red dot when recording; then it might be worthwhile.

Yeah I'll stick with Nanoflash or AJA Ki Pro Mini. This looks a little too low end to do the job. HDMI is ok but HD-SDI is what you really want.
