Around here, the production is FREE with the paid air time. The TV stations throw it in as an added perk. Effectively cuts us outsiders out of the gravy train.

Ouch! I guess you have to watch for lame local ads, then solicit those business' with a pitch about quality. I've thought of buying my own air time to play my own tv ad about my services. I already did one like that for my marketing agency job. We started with a badly done green screen with a used car salesman doing a typically bad "local" tv spot, then we went into some 3D animation. It's years old, and I could do much better now, but here it is:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NGsUfwwGKQ

I am "Johnny Johnson" the used care salesman. This spot actually pissed off the production guy at Fox, who produces those cheap-fast-bad style spots. We were friendly and I sent it to him for a laugh. It used to say "Tired of 'LOCAL' ads?". He took so much offense because he made those type ads, that I changed it to "Low Quality" because it's a small town and you want to remain friendly. But man he still edits linearly using the equivalent of 2 VCRs and a TV. That's how Fox does it in Eureka 2009. Anyway - I think the ad is funny.

That's a good idea Chad, though I think car dealerships are the wrong target. The reason they go with those cheap ads is because that's all they want to pay for. They're only interested in getting their prices and on the screen no matter how cheesy or bad the spot turns out.

Hey Handsome... That feels weird to say.

I was not targeting used car dealerships, I was just using that as an example of a bad ad. I think business should spend more for a nice branding spot that is not related to any sales or holiday. That way they have something they can always throw up to market themselves. But ads that relat to a sale that will only last a week don't really need a lot of effort because they are a one use item. Of course I'll always vote for putting as much budget into something as possible.

so that was the "big announcement"???.... I had high hopes.....but found it pretty lame... This has just convinced me to wait longer for the Scarlet...especially with RED announcing everything on the 30th....

Chadfish, that was a funny add on youtube! It pretty much sums up what local commercials are like. Around here the TV stations do the same thing. They will give you a free commercial in exchange of a certain amount of airtime...But luckily I have gotten many more customers because they see how much better a Pro commercial is and how much more impact it has on their business. A good commercial is more expensive, but it eventually gets them more customers and makes them more money in the long run....

But Chad...I have a question....why in the world are you still shooting interlace???? :zombie_smiley:

Not sure what exactly you were hoping for, but I'm very excited about the introduction of PMW350k, excellent Fuji auto focus lens, 2/3" cmos sensors, light weight, low power consumption, software patch for flash strobe frames, at this price point. Alister Chapman states the sensitivity and noise are better than FW900 and 700 to boot. It's got me pumped.

Well, I admit...I am just a spoiled little brat that is now accustomed in working in RAW.... and getting constant camera upgrades, features and firmwares for free from a company that closely works with its customer...:D I guess once you shoot RAW, you never go back... lol

sure, if you don't mind dealing with RAW in post. the great thing about these non-RAW cams is the ability to shoot and immediately edit quickly without having to convert the footage. i LOVE red. but sometimes, it is overkill for what the client needs and is willing to pay for. the red smokes any of these new cameras image-wise, but good luck shooting a wedding or any other eng shoot with a red. for guys that do that kind of stuff (not me), the 350 is a pretty nice addition to the sony lineup.

as far as the constant free upgrades from red, aren't they more like bug fixes and gradual delivery of features that were promised from the beginning? still looking for that 2k scaled mode that uses the whole chip.... red is a great company but they released a camera that was barely functional and have improved it over time. it still has it's quirks. sony, panny, etc. don't operate that way. they don't release a camera until all of it's implied features are functional and it is stable. that's why you see very few firmware upgrades from those guys.

But Chad...I have a question....why in the world are you still shooting interlace???? :zombie_smiley:

I still have not got the big announcement! I signed up and everything. Is it the EX1R?

3xm - I do not shoot interlaced anymore. I shot the "Honest Johnson" ad that way about 2 years ago, but now I shoot with the EX1 at 1080p30, or 720p30 if all it's doing is going to local TV and youtube.

Yes RED for wedding would indeed not quite work out! lol...but....when you shoot RED you can also shoot and edit right away using premiere, FCP, Vegas etc......(But at least you always have the choice of going RAW if needed). As far as the upgrades and firmware....yes true... some were bug fixes...but a lot of them were also options and functions that were simply enhancement, features and changes that WE asked for.....when was the last time you saw Sony, Panny or Canon give you so many enhancement (and not bug fixes) through their firmware? They want you to buy a whole new camera instead... ;-)

But indeed you are right that the RED camera is not the best choice for certain situation.....that is where I think the fixed lens Scarlet will come in handy. (thank God for competition...we all win at the end!!!) All I am saying is Sony really needs to step it up...they are too slow in their innovations...so far the two biggest innovators of the three have been Panny and Canon...especially Panny for bringing 24P to Dv and affordable HD camera with overcranking, solid state and 4:2:2 codec (when the DVX and HVX first came out)

By the way Cheez....your demo reel looks awesome!!!!!!!

Sorry Chad...I must have seen some of your old work...when I checked your youtube channel a lot of the stuff looked like it was shot interlaced! my bad!

(But at least you always have the choice of going RAW if needed).

With XDCAM-EX, I can dial the right 'look' in-cam, and smart render straight to Blu-ray without ever re-encoding the native video. I'll take that over raw.

The problem with the Sony EX-1 is that the 1080p mode maxes out at 30 frames per second which does not handle motion very well. With the Red Scarlet its highest resolution mode is 120 frames per second for glass smooth motion.

all good points. i think the debate that red will or will not put sony and panny out of biz is dead. eventually when, and if, scarlet hits the streets, it will change the game considerably for those of us who focus on digital film making. i think there will always be a market for eng shoulder mount cams and small cams like the ex1 and hvx200 for guys who want something they can turn on and go shoot. the scarlet fixed lens will be close but will likely still be very modular and will require a "build" to throw it on your shoulder.

i will probably always have a small "video" cam like the ex1 for run n gun and have my eye on the scarlet s35 or possibly an epic depending on framerate possibilities when they release them. for now, i'm jumping on the canon dslr train as i think it's best bang for the buck in my market. too many idiots with reds in la going out and shooting for $250 a day with the camera. no way i'm dumping $30k into a red one to go compete with that...

That is truly absurd! I understand trying to eat but charging 250 a day shooting on a RED ONE is simply ridiculous. I charge more than that using my hmc150/EX1!

And as far as the coveted 1080p60 format that is used by ESPN, Sony refuses to deliver that format unless you pay $150,000 for a F23. Sanyo which is a cheap consumer camera gives you 1080p60 but Sony refuses to offer it even in their professional cameras.

Sony doesn't "refuse to offer it", there's no market for it in broadcast video because there's no codified standard for 1080/60p yet. The ATSC and SMPTE and EBU and whatever other standards organizations haven't set the standards yet, so if anyone did try to market it, they'd be in the grave peril of finding out that their system ends up being non-broadcast-compliant.

EBU has always been against 1080i and in favor of 1080p.

2005 -- http://www.ebu.ch/en/technical/trev/trev_301-editorial.html -- "On emission standards, the EBU favours the use of progressively-scanned formats, such as 720p/50 or 1080p/50, rather than interlaced formats such as 1080i/25. On production standards, the EBU recognises that there may need to be a wider range of formats and suggests that broadcasters should buy equipment that supports, at least, three formats: 720p/50, 1080i/25 and 1080p/25. Although 1080p/50 is not yet a viable option, it is an attractive production format for high-quality production – from which 1080i/25 and 720p/50 versions can easily be derived. As 1080p/50 offers future-proofing of valuable content, the EBU is keen to promote its adoption in the longer term."

2009 -- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080p -- "Since September 2009, ETSI and EBU, the maintainers of the DVB suite, added support for 1080p50 signal coded with MPEG-4 AVC High Profile Level 4.2 with Scalable Video Coding extensions or VC-1 Advanced Profile compression; DVB also supports 1080p encoded at ATSC frame rates of 23.98, 24, 29.97, 30, 59.94 and 60.[6][7]

EBU requires that legacy MPEG-4 AVC decoders should at least not crash in presence of SVC and/or 1080p50 (and higher resolution) packets.[6] SVC enables forward compatibility with 1080p50 and 1080p60 broadcasting for older MPEG-4 AVC receivers, so they will only recognize baseline SVC stream coded at a lower resolution/frame rate and gracefully ignore additional frames, while newer hardware will be able to decode full-resolution signal."

As to "the grave peril of finding out that their system ends up being non-broadcast-compliant", EBU has never liked 1080i, but Sony pushed it and here we are, 1080i is used throughout Europe. Sony and NHK pushed 1080i into North American HDTV market despite that MIT professors and other industry leaders, who were chalking up HTDV future 10-15-20 years ago, were strongly against interlaced format.

So you all were hanging that Sony's BIG announcement would include 1080/60p or Red's big sensor? I think the networks can afford the F23's price tag already, or the Red. As long as they don't care, why should I?

I put in my pre-order for the PMW-350 yesterday.

See you in January with it.
