1 minute in the pub with the 7D, very low light. Very impressed.

Just handholding the 7D in the pub late at night, seeing what happens at very high ISOs. Nothing here was lower than ISO 1600, most of it much higher, some at 6400.

Be sure to watch in 720p on youtube! (link)

I think you'll agree that the camera did unbelievably well. There's noise in the image, obviously, but it tends to be unobtrustive, a light croma "shimmer" in the shadows. I see this is as big advantage to shooitng low-light on an SLR that I haven't seen discussed much: the noise signature tends to be much less jarring on a large sensor than a small one, it's more "grainy" than "noisy" in my opinion, at least when compared to prosumer video cameras. It's also much easier to pull down the levels slightly and end up with a clean shadow black. On HDV, expecially, this just isn't possible.

Of course, it's amazing how downsampling to 720p and compressing to h.264 for youtube upload zaps noise, as well. ;-)

All this talk about the 1DmkIV and it's "see in the dark" Laforet-approved ISOgodknowswhat had me a little jealous, but now I feel confident shooting in low light on the 7D.

Tech specs, for those interested:

EOS 7D
shooting in "M"
"Neutral" picture style, no grading in post (although youtube pulls down the gamma, as you know)
ISO 1600-6400
EF 50mm1.8II, wide open
A little bit of the 17-85IS at F4
30fps and 60fps, 1/60th shutter, always

Nice. It would be interesting to watch the original files to see how bad the noise really is. Is it possible to upload it somewhere?
