1.4x and 2x Extender compatability.

Ok after my screw up of thinking that the Canon 18-135mm IS would get great full frame zoom shots of things like birds from 60 meters away, I'm unsure of what to do.

Tamron AF 18-270mm F3.5-6.3 Di II? Maybe. But it's $500+ And no IS. Yeah quality might be great but I don't really care too much about quality since the T2i is better than the Sanyo wh1 I was planning to use. If it's better than the WH1, I'm stoked.

Problem is I need to get close up shots of birds and sunsets etc. Not 1000mm insane. Just a shot like this, without cropping (I hate how the example pictures show cropped images Grrrrrr!!!)

If the pincushin, barreling, vignetting, soft edges, etc happens a bit, I don't mind much. It's still going to put the Sanyo wh1 to shame.

So I'm thinking a 2x thingy. I don't know.

What does the Canon X1.4 extender or 1.4X extender do to non compatible lenses? Can I use it on the 18-135mm? Or is there some other magnification thingy I can use on the 18-135? Or is the 18-135 totally and utterly impossible when it comes to taking photos of birds and zoomed sunsets?

I don't want to buy a $500 lens, replacing the 18-135, and wasting the money I spent on the 18-135.

Also I'd LOVE the 1.4x, or the 2x to work on the Tamron 90mm macro lens for better macro shots. Why are they incompatible and what happens if I try them anyway?

So really. How do I get the 18-135mm to take shots like that Sunset without cropping it? And how do I get more magnification on the Tamron 90mm Macro? Or is it impossible?

Maybe? How shocking is that thing? Unusable?

And how shocking is that? Unusable?

Thanks guys. You all Rock!

Get the Canon 300mm f/4 IS. If you need more reach, get the 1.4x extender. AF is maintained in lenses that are f/4.0 and faster. You simply can't get the reach with AF without spending some dough.

Dude that's $1500!!!

I'm thinking under $50 for 2x 135mm.

Auto focus doesn't matter since that thing's useless anyway. Stupid thing focusing on stupid tree branches. I want the bird!!!

So I can get the crappy 2x lens thingy that screws on the filter thread, zoom all the way in, use manual focus and still get fairly great shots right?

Good enough to blow away the Average Handycams right?

And also, how do those Macro Tube Extenders shape up?
