Yes. SD card is so easy I have no idea why anyone would bother with Sony's absurd PC/Mac process for updating.
Just did without any problems. So far the only disappointment is that cache record turns off dual-slot recording, which is my default recording mode in case a card fails.
Proxy files are great for going straight from in-camera to phone for times when you want to share via social media sooner rather than later. But that's my only use case scenario.
That said, I'd agree with your assessment from your FX6 training video in that the proxies are pretty damn close to...
Again, when it works it works just fine.
The failures I've had were instances of FCPX just flat out not opening an XML or Library, not projects being messed up in a transfer. A project being messed up is a hassle but it can be worked with; a project that doesn't open at all can be a catastrophe.
To echo one of ahalpert's points: working in FCPX is *really* fast. If you don't need to work collaboratively and don't need to do extensive color grading it is the fastest NLE on a Mac, by a wide margin (I'd bet), once you learn it.
That said, it really isn't great for collaborative workflows...
I would *really* appreciate it if the camera didn't turn Proxy recording off when switching in and out of S&Q mode; I know the camera won't do proxies in S&Q (which is fine), but it should at least revert to the user's choice (in my case, Proxies "on") when exiting S&Q mode.
I finally got around to putting together some comparison footage I shot months ago of the FX6 and the FS5. This was just looking at exposure latitude. Not the most scientific of tests, but I did use the same model lens and tried to make it as close a comparison as possible. The FS5 automatically...
Congrats on the camera arriving!
Yes, you can use slog3 in custom mode now (though I haven't done so yet).
As for batteries: I've found that older Sony batteries charge just fine, but anything non-Sony won't charge at all. The only difference with older Sony batteries has to do with the lights...
Quicktime has always been pretty bad for me when it comes to displaying videos as they should appear; VLC is usually more accurate (or at least closer to what I see in Resolve).
That said, sometimes I've found the opposite to be true (especially when viewing footage exported from FCPX).
Thanks for the detailed reply! I know we've talked about it elsewhere, but it does seem like the trend is moving toward *always* grading in post, and thus not worrying about baking in a WYSIWYG look.
That said, I've started noticing more freelance jobs specifying the FX9 rather than the FX6...
You may have mentioned this elsewhere, but (1) do you know why Sony chose to strip the paint menus from the FX6? and (2) are you using an EVF or just the Z-Finder? If an EVF, which one?
Thanks!
Yeah, I've been through that thread. I'm sure there's the possibility of individual camera variation, but my FX6 doesn't seem soft at all; quite the opposite, to be honest (and I turn sharpening down or off).
The files definitely don't stand up super well to heavy grading, in my experience. But...
As an Fs5 owner I can confirm it is a BIG step up from that camera in many ways (although a properly exposed Fs5 can still look absolutely fantastic).
But he's talking about the F55, not the Fs5. Sony really muddied the waters with that naming...
I'm very happy with my FX6, but seeing the...
I have a possible shoot lined up for Colorado Springs sometime in October that will likely require a small lighting kit. I was thinking I'd rent something (and if anyone has rental house suggestions, or is willing to rent kit, please let me know) but I'm toying with the idea of investing in a...
I get full functionality (AF, iris, IS) with a couple Sigma lenses in EF mount (18-35, 150-600) via the Sigma MC-11 adapter. My Metabones is a speedbooster so I haven't tried it, but the MC-11 works so well I'm not sure the MB mounts (non-SB) offer any advantage.
Just note the AF isn't perfect...
Welcome!
My FX6 handle has a little bit of play fore/aft (i.e., slight amount of rotation within the connection) but no side-to-side play or wiggle. That said, it's *much* better than the amount of play I have in my Fs5 side grip.
