Fresh thread.
It's been years since the last Portland DVXUser meetup and many people (myself included) have joined since then. I propose we meet on some evening in late March. If you would like to come, please reply to this thread, that way I'll know who to invite. Ryan Walters (235Studios)...
So several days ago I downloaded all the Dramafest entries and today I watched on called "Trouble with Hearts". WTF? I looked for any discussions on it and can't find any.
I recently purchased one of the Alzo "HMI" HID lights and wanted to make a fairly objective test as for the light quantity. They advertise "800w" equivelent output for only 140w power consumption. Well a claim like that needs to be tested. So I did a simple test, I put up a few of my scotch...
I didn't know which section of the board to post this, so mods feel free to move it.
I help my dad in a wedding videography business and we are becoming increasingly frustrated at the low exposure range of prosumer cameras. Just about every outdoor wedding we film has the couple stand under a...
I am in pre-production on my own short set in the medieval period and would love to compare notes with someone else trying to do the same thing. Oh, and I am talking about a battle scene (chain mail, helmets, sword, etc) and not village life.
I didn't post this under the sticky because I have no interest in making my own scrims and frabrics, but rather I'd like to make my own frame and then just buy the standard Matthews fabrics. I mean, the cheapo Matthews frame is $250 and then the good ones are like $400+, and it's just steel or...
This weekend was my first time out as a sound mixer on a set with my new setup. The gig was Envision's DVXUser Dramafest entry. There were quite a few pros on set (a real steadicam op with a huge IMDB page, pro makeup artist, first AD, set decorator, gaffer, etc) so I felt the pressure to not...
This weekend I was mixing for a short film (one of the Dramafest entries actually) and on set we had a kickass real pro steadicam op. In between takes he would take off his steadicam rig and hang it on a special steadicam bar that bolted to the top of a beefy stand. Then on the other end of it...
Okay, so I own a Canon 20d and I've heard all about RAW mode but I have no idea how to work with it, why I would want, what's the difference between RAW-jpeg and RAW uncomp, etc. I tried searching the archives but couldn't find a good thread breaking this info down. Does anyone have any good...
I would really love the ability to start from a statically placed 4k image and create moving 2k images in post. Case in point: to take a shot of a house and zoom in towards the window while staying in 2k the whole time, or to take a shot and pan across a 4k image while outputting a 2k image...
I have a 42"x42" westcott scrim jim frame and I'm going to buy a silk for outdoor, direct sunlight diffusing. Is full stop artificial silk the best or should I duck under that to 3/4 or even half stop?
Thanks
I've been wondering how many 4x4 filters are going to be that useful for Red.
I can see the advantage of NDs, ND grads and polarizers (all to control exposure, etc), but beyond those, are there going to be that many uses? Tiffen has a nifty "Film Look" filter kit from B&H that I've always...
So I'm putting together my Chimera lantern with mogul bulb setup for portable work and I'm wondering if anyone knows of any mogul based 105w or greater high CRI (90+) bulbs? I read that a 105w CFL bulb is the equivelant of about a 500w tungsten. So I think I'd have the ultimate portable...

I was afraid it would be a "kids movie" but ended up really enjoying it. I never read the book so I couldn't compare it.
I have no idea how they got a PG rating. And given the actress who played Arya the princess, gosh I wish it would would have been...
At my day job (software engineering) my company is building a new building and asked my opinion about interior decorating, color choices, etc. Well I think one of the things they may be overlooking is lighting and how it affects people as they work. So, does anyone know a link to any good...
I'm starting to line up what I need for Red to use with my Nikon still glass. What matte box is reasonably affordable but yet will attach to the Red rail rods, has 2-3 filter trays (at least one of which that rotates) and french flag(s)? I like Cavision but they don't seem to have a package...
I couldn't afford the flag kit from Matthews in one fell swoop so I'm building as I go. Right now I've got in the 24x36 size: 1 flag, 1 single scrim, 1 double scrim, 1 silk, 1 1/4 stop silk and then in the 18x24 size I have a double and a silk. What seems reasonable to get next? It seems a...
So I'd like to hear everyone's stories of where their filmmaking gear has helped them in some area of life totally outside of filmmaking (excluding the obvious non-filmmaking uses of cameras and computers). I've got two such stories, both involving my pregnant wife :-).
This summer it was...
I read a lot about people trying to adapt a painters pole for audio, but what about for portable boom light? I see this setup on pro sets a lot. How do I convert that funky plastic threading into a 5/8 stud?
