FX6: BIG 6 for FX6 is here.

Just after midnight. The first few minutes of the 19th March Sony's Ver. 6.0 software appeared on our Sony Aussie support site. So it's finally here. Took about ten minutes to install it. All went smoothly. So I guess it must be popping up across the Sony blogosphere around the globe. Had a quick look, looks interesting. Off to bed now as I have a shoot in the morning. Will be checking it all out over the next few days. For Aussie shooters here is the Ver. 6.0 down link:

EDIT: You have to 'assign' the BIG 6 menu to an assignable button of choice. Under the assignable buttons menu the selection you are looking for is called: HOME.

Chris - I don't have an FX6 - but certainly like that feature when it came with FW update for my a7sIII - and good to read that Sony is updating other "old" models. Thanks for posting.
Can I also just say - you are much braver or adventurous than me - updating the firmware the night before a shoot! Yikes! (or maybe the shoot is with a different camera)

Mark, I thought about the update risk just before a shoot. Like I did that with my A7iv. I was okay with the A7 upgrade but v6 on the A7iv bricked the camera for many. V6.01 fixed that! That also provided the new menu structure like it did for the A7Siii.

With the FX6 I thought what the hell. I can always use my backup, an FS7 if I have to, or the A7iv. Likewise, I never turn up on a job with one camera. Forty plus years of shooting have proved to me things can go wrong. Just got back from the shoot, a couple of interviews, and all worked fine. I just have to learn the new points provided n the upgrade. Onward and upward! Hopefully. (y) :D

Looks like a decent update. Have you noticed any improvement on the AF? I'm kind of ascared of updating for a few weeks until we see if there are bricks... BTW does the new overlays take away real estate from the actual image on the screen?

Sony claim there are AF improvements. But to be honest on the interviews I did this morning I couldn't see any difference to what I am used to. Yes, sadly the new surround display does eat into the picture area. I'm playing around with markers. Before the update I ran full and 95%. I haven't worked what I'll end up doing marker wise yet. It's a reasonable crop, because when you hit the 'display' button to clear the display there is a noticeable jump back to the full LCD border. Early days. More to work out!

Thanks, Chris. The LCD is already on the small side so taking away more real estate isn't great. Is there an option to overlay like the previous version?

No sir! Not that I have discovered so far in the short time I've looked at it. Though your question was already on my mind. So I will be looking shortly. Busy at the moment!

I see over on NewsShooter, most seem to like this windowed mode.
Look, yes, nice to have all the info in an easy-to-read format, but it does cut down on image real estate. It doesn't concern me too much because once I'm rolling I generally hit the 'display' button and clear the screen of info and in that mode it jumps back to full screen. Once I set all my shoot parameters and hit the Rec button I don't need to see anything else, It's good the Zebs are still onscreen when the display is off.

As for the BIG 6 menu, I did assign it to a button... but then I undid that move. Everything that's on that BIG 6 display is also available on the 1st level menu button press. Being primarily a solo operator where I do everything camera setup wise the BIG 6 option isn't high on my must-have list.

Now if you are going to use a monitor, SmallHD, Ninja type of thing on your camera as your main composition / focusing tool, and you are working with an AC, you could use the FX6's LCD as an AC's screen on the other of the camera where he/she can access the touch screen functionality of the BIG 6 display and make changes to the camera without coming around to the operator side and diving into camera menus. So yes, I can definitely see BIG 6's appeal in certain shooting scenarios.

I don't know whether I am conning myself, but in HD mode and HD crop mode I'm sure the image quality looks improved in Ver. 6.0 when using Clear Image Zoom. I feel pretty sure it is better....?

I’m paranoid that I’m going to accidentally change a setting so I tend to keep the OSD on while rolling - OSD OCD ;). I’m glad the zebras stay on in the non windowed mode though…

Understood. Once you are rolling you can always hit the 'HOLD' button I guess?

No. Well not yet, I don't think so? That's with any of the lenses I'm using. I really haven't had any issues previously so hard to judge I guess.

I think it also has to do when setting the AF area to Wide (or that is what Sony Service told me when I had the FX6 & 28-135 in for a clean/service).
