When to rely on natural light?

I could've sworn your question was about switching from close-ups to wide shots. Anyway, if you just move your feet and use the same prime, the DoF will expand as you move focus from 4 feet to ∞. Camera and lighting choices were definitely budget-sensitive. They had about $1m to shoot the...

When to rely on natural light?

David, one other thing occurred to me. They were shooting on an Alexa with ISO 1600, and daylit tended to mean overlit. Thus it was a question of adding/removing ND filters, and I didn't watch closely enough to see if they used Charles Papert's scheme or another.

When to rely on natural light?

I can't speak for the DP because I am not him, but of course when you switch from 85mm 2.0 to 14mm 2.0, for example, that would largely solve your DoF issue. EDIT: Good eye, Charles. Was probably about 1.8 on 85mm.

When to rely on natural light?

I recently shot stills on a set in Kentucky and was impressed by what they did with natural light. Largely sidelit windows with diffusion/bounce as necessary. I'd like to link a whole folder here but they'd come stab me. Anyway here are a couple.

    Brothers Grimsby

This one intrigued me because I think Sacha Baron Cohen is a comic genius (I don't use the term lightly) and decent social commentator to boot. And the critics just savaged it: some of the "top critics" on Rotten Tomatoes said things like, "This makes the worst Adam Sandler film look like...

    OTHER: As promised

I threatened in a recent thread to hit you guys with a wedding video, which I think we can all agree is the worst sort of video. Well good news--the wait is over! If your reaction is "hey, this just looks some chump walking around a wedding with his DSLR," that's because it is in fact just...

    OTHER: flight school demo

Alright this definitely isn't high art but I'll post it for comment and criticism. A local flight school needed a demo to loop at their booth at a trade show. And they needed it in 24 hours. So yesterday I grabbed my shoulder rig, and this morning sent back this. https://youtu.be/BD_hkasnIGc

Exposure problem with Nex-5t and EF adapter

I bought a new Nex-5t on an Amazon lightning deal and mostly think it's great. However, there's one issue that might be fatal for my purposes. When I attach my Canon lenses via a Fotga adapter, the exposure in video mode gets a mind of its own. I demonstrate here: http://youtu.be/KnIo2i5EsaY...

    follow focus question

I'm piecing together a 15mm rig and just added a follow focus. It operates excellently, with one snag: the pressure of the gear against the barrel pushes the barrel away from the follow focus, and consequently it slips. On my Canon bodies (7d and t3i), is there any way to keep the body in line...
