"Oceans Firing" Music Video

wow...the shot of the drummer from above with the piece of wood in focus in the foreground...I took a photo of someone once in a similar location and it looks exactly like that. haha.

anyway, that was a great music video. Not too flashy or extravagant, very personal. I liked that about it. Awesome picture as well. very clean. and the editing was right on.

I really like everything exvept for some extremely noticable repetative shots. Mostly from the second location. But other than that, great footage, excellent cc and good use of lighting on the first locale.

Repetative shots? I didnt repeat any shots, or resuse any footage. Theres some stuff from the same angles, and the verses are identical (as far as music and instrumentation goes) which can make some of the shots look ver similar, but I know I didnt repeat any footage. I was sure of that. Which specific shots were you referring to?

Im glad everyone likes the CC. Im not usually fond of brown/ tan CC but for some reason it worked for this location. Odd the way things work out sometimes....

First off, I'd like to say that your video is very impressive. It looks really great. The music is not quite my taste, but your visuals made watching the entire video easy, and I never wanted to stop. My ONLY critique (besides lack of plot) is similar to the one that said your shots were repetitive. Here's why I think someone said that: I realized your shots were never actual repeats of each other, however, I noticed that with the exception of only 1, all of your lateral camera movements w/ the steadicam or dolly were to the right. I thought initially this may be intentional. If you have some shots moving to the left, and you used those, it may seem more varied.

Again, this is a MINOR/MINUTE/INFINTESIMALLY SMALL critique. The video blew me away.

Well if you notice, there are no crane shots or dolly shots outside. Its mostly handheld shots, and some steadicam. This is due to the fact that the rain came a few hours early, and we werent finished. I never noticed that all the steadicam shots are to the right.... wow. I gotta go back and look at that.

Thanks for the comments King Cole. Glad to hear that it kept your attention all the way through. If only it would have rained on time we would of had that third location in there and would have seemed a lot less repetative. Thanks...

Awesome music video! Well done! What particular settings did you us for the inside shot on your DVX? How did you get your blacks so deep in your opening shot of the guitarist?

man, that was sweet!
I wish there was a bit of a plot, but they can't all have em right?

My favorite shot is actually the first/last one. The lighting is fantastic on that one!

Well I posted once some of my settings, but I'll copy it again just in case:
For the inside shots, we colored it in camera very cool, as blue as we could get in camera before saturation noise came in. (We did this because all the inside walls are yellow, and the bounced light made the walls stick out like crazy, and we hate yellow walls) All lights were gelled with 1/2 CTB.
No matter how we white balanced it inside, it was still yellow because of all the walls, or when we white balanced to blue the people had that annoying blue tint to them, so I just moved the 3 or 4 settings in the menu and made it as cool as I could, but I think around +5, because +6 and 7 brought in too much noise in the saturated areas. Thats all I can really remember.

About the blacks, I color corrected first and then adjusted my brightness/contrast 2nd, and thats how it came out. Pretty simple. I dont know if the fog machine running had anything to do with it or not.

Well, with the label status of the band, they figured it would be better to do a performance video for their first so anyone who gets their hands on the dvd would see them for how they perform, and not for what visual story they put to their song. If a second video comes around, which I think it might, I think we might work a storyline into it. I would like to shoot one that has a story line that just reinforces the visuals of the lyrics, but not somethings that is just there to have "a story" and different location. Because Ive seen alot of videos that say theres a plot invloved, but its just random handleld footage of people cut randomly into the video.... which I think is just an excuse to say they have a story. I guess thats why this performance video worked. It was pure performance and wasnt watered down in my opinion. But Im tired and I think Ive already rambled too much. I have a feeling this paragraph wont make sense.

Im glad everyone likes the music video. Once I get free time I will post up the BTS video of it so maybe you guys can see what went into it.

And that last shot was lit with just a 500wt fresnel with CTB gel and 1/4 diffusion gel I believe.

Great video, Kevin. I like the shake effect at certain beats--the low shot of the drum, for instance. Was that done in post, or was the music really that loud in production?

Well it actually was probably the loudest situation Ive ever been in, just because of the bad acoustics in that concrete and metal room, and we had to have the music so loud so we could hear it over the drums, but to answer your question, no, the camera was not affected by the volume. All shakes were done in post.

So Kev. How does the video stand up in higher res play back? It's low res on your site.
Is standard res 640 by 480 or 600 by 800? I guess my question is how big can you view the video before image quality starts to show?

Kevin, Congrats, very nice specially the first take, that seems 35mm, Your Video is Almost Perfect I think if you use more deep of Field no one can difference that is on Video.

Sorry its taken me a few days to reply. My internet went out all weekend and just got it fixed.
Its 500x300 on our site, and the video is the regular 720x480. I havent tried to view it larger than that, but high res on a DVD looks amazing. I cannot believe the quality we got from that location and lighting. Super super crisp. Did that answer your question?
