"Oceans Firing" Music Video

Heres our newest music video. It started raining about 3 hours earlier than expected, so other than everything we own getting soaked, we were able to make it work. We would've had more outside shots at a 3rd location, but sometimes you gotta go with the flow.

For those who have seen the Tolerance Trailer, this is shot at the same prison. Let me know what you guys think about it. Enjoy.

hey kevin, that is an awesome music video. It looks like an MTV music video. The lighting is great! I also liked the video in sync with sound. It is amazing. I wish I can make something like that.

NICE! Great vid man! I LOVE that first location.. the ceiling is just fantastic.

Really solid work over all. Look forward to seeing more of your stuff.

Yeah, we used a steadicam rig for the fast/ wide movement shots. Most of them were walking and some were running. I do highly suggest clearing your path of sharp rocks before you run with a steadicam.
That ceiling is awesome, isnt it? We fell in love with the ceiling immediately. If it only weren't lead.... aw.
Thanks for the praise....

Kevin,
Dude, I loved the song, the shots, basicly everything men. So if you guys shot the footages with the DVX, what did you guys use the XL1 for then?

Tolerance, one of the things that made me feel you guys have passion for making movies is the lil lil clips of how the movie, Tolerance was made. I will not lie, those lil clips did show me somethings that I would love to see. I like the way the guy was rolling on the floor, I mean, those shots brought life and pains into the mind of the viewers.

So now tell me, what NLE and Operating system, mic (the audio seems to be on stage) did you use for editing and what application did you use for color correction. I like the raw footage and the final footage of the detention seen, great guys.... great.

If you guys where in ATL, I will surely have you guys help me out in my movie.

xilixfilms,
This was edited on Vegas on a PC. The band went to nashville and recorded the song, so we didnt do any recording in that sense. We only used the on camera mic to record the on set playback so we could time everything up. Color correction was just brightness/contrast, color balance, and black and white. I actually did it by accident. We werent even going for that color/look and I accidentally hit my scroller while on color balance and I got this weird vanilla coloring, so I tweaked it a bit and sent it to the band just to see if it pleased them and they loved it, so it stuck. I never knew I would color correct to brown, or have a project thats asked of it.
So does this mean that you want to see behind the scenes of the music video?

Great work man! Just a reiteration of what everyone's said... your lighting and editing were great and your camera movement was superb. The lighting through the fog on the refrain was my favorite. Very cool.

How many watts were your lights and what shutter speed did you shoot at?

Hey man, I thought this was really good. I liked alot the beginning and ending and how they were the same...I thought that was really great although I would have like to see the pull back a little smoother, like on a dolly. But still I loved the style and lighting of that. Actually the lighting was great through the whole thing. I liked the colors also, and I REALLY loved how you worked in the shots where they are all standing around clapping. My only complaints I guess would be that their wasnt enough location variety...which isnt a huge problem and that the band looked a little ackward at times...which isnt your fault at all.

Overall I thought this was really well done and reminded me alot of the classic case video posted on here a little while ago. If you get a chance, take a look at my music videos, I could use a critique from somone like you who obviously knows their stuff.

Most of our lights were 500w. We had one that was 200w and it shot straight down on the drumset.

I shot with the shutter turned off except for the shot at the very end where I circled the drums with steadicam - that was 1/120.

Well that was our last shot of the day, the pullback shot, and the band was very tied. They drove all the way from Texas in one day, and then we shot all day, so they went 3 days with no sleep and then they had to drive 4 hours for their next show. So everyone was already packing up and part of my dolly had already gotten packed up, so I did my best with steadicam. I wish it were smoother and I regret not taking the time to get my dolly back out. But the band was so tired. They got into Charlotte at 5am, and they just ate breakfast and we starting setting up at 7am.

We had a 3rd location picked out, and then the instrumentals were supposed to be individual shots of the band members, each in their own location, and so we would of had like 6 or 7 locations, but the rain came about 3 hours early and we had to rush inside and it rained and poured until about midnight, so we were stuck with just the 2 locations. We also wanted to go back outside to that outside location and shoot it at night all lit up, but again, the stupid rain.

Thanks for the comments. I'll check out your music videos.

Simply outstanding!!!!
What a great vehicle to sell folks on the capabilities of the DVX when in proper hands.
I personaly, and am sure a whole lot of other folks would like to know your set up.
i.e., Camera settings? 16X9 Anamorphic or 4X3 letterboxed? 24P? any 60i?... thought I
saw a little time remapping in there. What Model DVX a,b, or original? Any other info
would be helpful as the forum would love to know. Once again... great job!

DVX100a
We shot 4x3 and letterboxed in post.
All 24p, no 60i
For the inside shots, we colored it in camera very cool, as blue as we could get in camera before saturation noise came in. (We did this because all the inside walls are yellow, and the bounced light made the walls stick out like crazy, and we hate yellow walls)
All lights were gelled with 1/2 CTB.
Outside, W.B. as natural as we could get it. It was very very cloudy all day.
Thats all I can think of right now.

This is how we white balanced it on set (with no CC here)

And this is after.... with CC and letterbox...

Nice stuff.

The first wide shot after the black spot was great. Some of the smoke or cC made the image a bit hazy for my taste but it still looked great.

To be honest I didn't like the out side stuff and it made the video feel low budget to me.

Really liked your camera work inside.

NICE.. again.. still nice. Oh man your in Huntersville? Too bad we never got up.. I just move back to south Fl from Charlotte. I'll be back up for some music videos though.

Kudos on snagging a tooth andnail band BTW. That is a label I deff. wanna work with.

I really like everything exvept for some extremely noticable repetative shots. Mostly from the second location. But other than that, great footage, excellent cc and good use of lighting on the first locale.
