The HVX at GV Expo

Heck, even if the HVX200's resolution matched the Sony Z1, I'll be happy
with all the extras such as progressive and all it's other formats.

It's totally absurd to argue over resolution figures done by different people under different conditions--it makes *no* sense. You might as well read the tea leaves in the bottom of your cup to figure out which camera is right for you. Jan has always been straight with us, so if Panny has done comparisons with the Z1 and HD100 and the HVX200 came out with higher res--I'd believe her. I mean the actual specs can be proved or disproved in a day once the HVX is released, so what would be the point of making things up? There are some important factors that differentiate all these cameras and still frame resolution is probably one of the least significant factors. Judge the camera on it's useability and total image quality once it comes out.

Thanks for that report, Barry!

I gather some of us on this thread don't quite understand how GOOD a horizontal spec of 700 lines is! Resolving 700 line pairs is DAMN good! Modern SD 2/3" CCD cameras (the $30K+ kind) with broadcast optics (the $20K kind) only manage 800 line pairs (in 16:9 mode). At RESfest L.A., Jan said she thought the camera's horizontal resolution was only about 650 lines. Hearing that it's 700 lines is GREAT news!!!

Questions for Barry:

1. Was the 700-line spec from playback or straight out of the camera?
2. Did you have a chance to compare the HVX200's sensitivity with any other camera on the floor?

I think the chart only goes up to 800 lines.

go to photographic sites and read reviews about the Panasonic photocams (like the FZ20 and FZ30). on paper Panasonic seems to go understatement and then performs well in real-life. it looks like the whole visual division of Panasonic works into "real-life-kick-ass" rather than "throw-numbers-at-them". the DVX didn´t seem that special at first, but look what happened. same will (hoefully) be true for the HVX. be patient guys, Jan and crew got it right, i am sure.

Horizontal resolution is a perfectly legitimate specification to use for comparison purposes (unlike, the perhaps less informative, "pixel resolution"). It's one of the few specs that help to quantify the ENTIRE optical, imaging, and encoding system.

Hey guys. I attended the GVExpo yesterday at the D.C. Convention center and finally saw the HVX; it was like seeing a celebrity or something, it was that cool. Anyway, I saw Jan there too but didn't get to talk to her, however I have a friend who also went and did talk to Jan and he called me immediately afterwards and told me some interesting stuff: apparently the release date is somewhere around Dec. 29, also the HVX will come in no less that six bundles- the most interesting of which is a HVX with the P2 storage/reader deck and two 4G P2 cards for about $8-9K. She said that she had been hearing a lot of complaints from industry pros and consumers alike about the inconvenience of the P2 card and storage. So with this bundle you can dump 40 gigs worth of footage to the portable deck wile on set and not have to worry about immediately dumping it to a laptop hard drive. Now, I don't know how true this is but this guy is a good friend who works for a local production company and I trust him. Either way, I'm wondering if anyone else has heard this?

But the thing is, we need the best resolution on the tea leaves, and without knowing all the specs, where are we then? ;)

Okay... I just saw the footage this guy shot with Jan and she says, on camera, that the release date IS December 29 and the main reason for the delay is because they were trying to come up with bundle packages so users could have more affordable solutions for shooting HD right out of the box, she mentioned SIX bundles but I could only remeber four of them:

1) HVX + 2 8G P2 Cards= $9,999
2) HVX + 5 4G P2 Cards= $9,200
3) HVX + 2 4G P2 Cards + P2 Card Reader/40G Store= $8,500
4) HVX + 2 2G P2 Cards= $6,500

I hope this is the final plan because that that HVX + 2 4G P2 + that Panasonic 40G P2 drive for $8,500 is sounding like a great deal. Anyway,I hope there is someone else out there that can back this up... I mean, I don't want to look stupid.

Wow, I hope you're wrong because even number 1 seems a bit steep. If P2 cards have been dropping then $10k for the cards and camera shouldn't even be the street price, but I'm not going to panic. I'm hoping that the retail Gods will have the ability to sell the camera and two 8 gigs for closer to $8k....hey, I can dream can't I? :)

Here's what I'd like to see...

HVX... two 8G cards and the 40G store for $10,000... or better yet a 200G (instead of the 40G) or higher store all for $10,500... just a dream...

Panasonic's price for number 1 retails at $9,995 last I heard so these prices aren't too bad.

Actually, I'm hoping they offer a ONE 8 GB bundle.

The two 8GB bundle is the same price it was from the start.

If this true, I'll be ordering my P2 cards out of Canada.
I'm hearing these are a better deal. This does NOT make sense
to me! WTF

Does number 4 even make sense? I thought the P2 2 gig cards weren't even capable of HD data rates. I hope we get some more info on this. Dec 29 really stinks though! Was hoping we might see these bad boys before XMas. Back in April we joked that as long as it came out before Dec. 31 it would still be 4th quarter 2005. Never dreamed they would really cut it this close!

2 & 3
seem like the best options for the price (until the price comes down )
the 2 8G P2's haven't changed at all

5 4G P2's?
-Five?

24Gs and the reader seems like a great bundle to me. that gets you going for a while until the 16GB devices are out.

It makes sense for those who are going to shoot only in SD, want to go the tapeless route, and don't want to spend a lot of cash.

Just for clarification, if that one bundle is referring to the P2 Store, then it should be listed as 60GB I believe - unless Panasonic is planning on making a 40GB version of the P2 Store (although that would seem unlikely).
